Ghost In The Shell Manga Discussion

As I have done for Full Metal Panic, I shall do for my newly obtained Ghost in the Shell manga. I will, regardless of anyone caring, post back most mornings to tell you all how i'm loving the Ghost in the Shell manga. I really cant see me disliking this manga. I like the occaisonal colour pages, the boobs, the story. What could be better?

I'm just curious to see if it can equal the superb standard Stand Alone Complex set.

Anyone else got stuff to discuss about the GitS manga?

Also again, stuff crucial to the plot, can we keep in spoiler tags?

//Edit// Also, because of my stupidness in the other thread, can we put what Chapter/Manga (Because there are 3 GitS manga's, and this discussion thread applies to them all) it would be spoiling to any parts we're putting in tags? That way, people like me who will only be part way through the manga know what we can and cant look at :)

The one thing I found off putting was the constant techno-nonsense in the GitS manga. Maybe it was the fact it was in writing rather than the characters voice but it seemed a lot more substantial than in the films or the series.
The art also took some getting used too.

Gonna have to pick up the sequels soon. Definately warrents a re-read.

Yeah, the art is very different from what i'm more used to (Stand Alone Complex), it reminds me of UK/USA Graphic Novels in a way, just a bit scruffier.

Now you see i was happy with the art, and the little faces the characters pulled. As for the techno babble, i just scoured the editors notes for an understanding. One thing that Dark Horse excelled at was the quality but i'm still unsure if the high price tag warrants that

I loved the techno babble particularly the way it was pulled off with editor notes making the story more imersive.

Also out of interest am i the only one having trouble getting into the second book? I found the original and 1.5 easy to get into and easy to dip into and leave a while before returning but with 2.0 it just doesn't seem to mesh in my mind and i have to read it in closer sittings.

I liked the original a lot. The artwork was of a high standard and the coloured sections are exquisite. I'm in agreement with Insanity Prelude on the techo babble too, for me it just gave the setting more depth and believability.

The second book however 'man-machine interface' was not to my liking. The artwork is absolutely stunning, but the story I just found to be a confusing pile of garbage. The excessive amounts of nudity/pantyshots didn't really help either, just gave it a creepy undertone which really undermined anything more intelligent it may have been aspiring to.

From what i read techincally 1.5 was just the chapters that never made it into 2.0 (the numbering system is a bit odd like) I would glady try and read them if i could find them for a reasonable price

Got the first Chapters down last night. So far I do like it alot, cause its got a really nice feel to it. My only gripe is it is, as typical with GitS, quite hard to understand at times. Infact, at the moment, alot of the time. There are quite a few Motoko-like characters, and seems to be a few scene switches in succession. Still enjoying it though, and with any luck will re-read at a later date so I can fully understand everything.

I'd reccomend this manga for sure.

Well, last night I didn't get to go to sleep till about 0100 (1.00am) because of this bastard manga

I've recognised a fair few bits from the Anime here, and its really nice just to see the small similarities. The cyber sex[Chapter 3 'Spoiler (Not really anything plot crucial though] was awesome too. I gotta say, I always thought people called Shirow a pervert because of the skimpy outfit Motoko wears, but obviously, I was wrong.

Don't worry guys; i'm fine talking to myself here

Anyway; Last night I read chapter 6. And a very good chapter it was indeed. Again, repeating what i've said before, it's nice to regonise little snippets that Stand Alone Complex took from here. Chapter 6 also saw the first "Case Closed" scenario. I'm not looking forward to see where the manga moves too next :)

So far, loving it :)

Last night I read Chapter 7, and again it's great to see this really moving. The first 2-3 chapters were quite slow, but in context I guess thats to help develop the characters, and lay thier outlines down, but for someone like me who has seen the Anime, little is needed to be expained.

The story is really pushing forward, and i'm really enjoying it (As i've said many a time). At first the art was a Love/Hate thing, where at times I loved it, other times I was feeling it wasn't as great. I do love it now though. As soon as this manga is finished, i'm definatly checking out Shirow's other works.

I recommend you give Appleseed a look then, it has a similar feel to Ghost in the Shell though it takes a more epic approach.

I think I actually preferred the Appleseed manga to the GiTS manga. I think after seeing the GiTS anime I was not quite sold on the characters looking so different in the manga and it drew me away from the actual story.
