Geneon begin week of announcements

This coming weekend one of the largest US anime conventions will take place. Tens of thousands of fans flock to the "Anime Expo" every year and influential companies like ADV, Geneon and FUNimation promise to be out in force with a number of new anime acquisitions to announce.

While a lot these forthcoming announcements will not immediately affect the UK industry, US acquisitions usually play a vital role in eventual UK releases and so we will be covering this weekend's news with as much enthusiasm as ever.

Kicking the week off in fine fashion then is the news that Geneon have pre-licensed "Gun X Sword" (it hasn't aired in Japan yet), the latest series from Goro Taniguchi and his creative team (the people behind PlanetES, s-CRY-ed and Infinite Ryvius).

So what does everyone else think will be licenced? From the stuff im following atm id say Geneon or FUNimation will licence Trinity Blood and Bandai will pick up Aquarion. ADV will probably confirm there involment in the new Guyver TV series

Hmmm , wishful thinking on my part here perhaps but lets see. Not sure if all the R1 companies will be there, but assuming so :p

I'd like to think Bandai would announce Mai Hime (seeing as its pretty much a given it goes to them) .

Funimation are pretty much guarenteed to get Trinity Blood.

Other shows I think have a good chance of being licensed are School Rumble and Tsubasa. Although unsure who they will go too.

Any other guesses would just be wishful thinking on my part of other titles.

Well I'm kinda hoping someone will have the "balls" to pick up Honey & Clover or Tactics, but as usual, it'll be the shounen titles they'll all be vying for. It'd be great to see one of them go for Bleach, as to be honest, it'd be like turning down Naruto, if they didn't.

I'm not so sure about School Rumble Manga_Minx, I don't think many of the other zany anime sold very well, but you never know!

Im not particularly fussed if it dosen't, I just thought its popularity mixed with other school comedies being licensed gave it a higher chance.

Not that I've seen it, but Honey & Clover is something seeing as I see it being compared to Fruits Basket a lot.

I think companies will be put of Bleach becuase of its lenght so id be surprised it it was licenced yet but if Narutro does well for Viz they'll probably pick it up

I'd say, basing on Naruto's success , Bleach is practically already Viz's.

Geneon's latest tactic of what appears to be throwing a dart at anime listings to pick up titles (I mean Starship Troopers? o_O , Bottle Fairy?????), might mean they licence some more niche shows I am interested in.

Well Naruto hasnt been a success yet, it may end up flopping because people have seen the fansubs and arent bothered buying an insane ammount of dvds and what does well on tv can never be determined in advance to they cant say "people want to see this so it will be a huge hit" and invest a huge ammont of money before making back the money they have spend on Naruto

That was actually a typo on my part *teach me not to re-read posts* I meant to say "Basing on if Naruto's successful" :p

No one knows it's length yet! There's plenty of speculation, but I still say it's unlikely to be as long as everyone thinks!

Well the production company will have a much better idea of its lenght than the public so if someone is interested in the licence the production company will tell them. As it is its going to be over 50, rumours say its only to be about 70-80, and thats still alot longer than an avarage show and the longer a show it the more it costs and the less it sells so that will still put alot of companies off licencing it.

I'm pinning my hopes on Bandai for a stateside release of Mai HiME, I'm also quietly optimistic that either Funi or Geneon will capitalise on the buzz around Honey & Clover.
It looks as though Funi have the rights to Trinity Blood all tied up, but as Hybrid said there's always a chance Geneon could poach it at the last minute.

Didn't think Honey & Clover was that special, it utterly bored me to death! But yes it will probably get the Stateside thumbs up for release along with - probably: Mai-HiME, Tsubasa and eventually Bleach.

Though I'd like to see:
Kannduki no Miko
Maria-sama ga Miteru
Gokujou Seitokai
Gaarasu Kamen (Glass Mask)

But that's just wishful thinking - here's hoping! :D

Certainly would like to see Maria-Sama ga Miteru and Kannduki No Miko, as I said im still randomely hopeful Geneon will pick them up. But yes most likely wishful thinking

I love Honey & Clover. I think it's more of an "older" fans type of anime.

I doubt very much Glass Mask (the original or 2005 version) will get a release ever! Companies are shying away from anything remotely shoujo at the moment :(

I agree, i don't see it being as long as everyone thinks, as i think there are only so many places they can take the story line, kind of a shame though, as i don't know what i will do when it finishes.
I hope it doesn't get licensed for a while though, and i really can't say who i'd hope will license it, just someone who will do a good job.

I also love Honey & Clover, and i love to eventually see it licensed, it really deserves it

The ones I'm looking out for are BECK and Honey & Clover, but with them both being distinctly Japanese stories, I suspect only FUNimation and perhaps Geneon will have the resources to take the financial risk.
