Gamer advice for an anime fan

Heya guys,

Well, this is my first time in the gamer section of the forum, and if I may I'd like to pick your brains for advice.

My first love is and always will be anime, but this weekend I decided to diversify a bit and bought myself an Xbox360 Elite. Nothing unusual to most of you I'm guessing, but keep in mind that before this the most I played game wise was the odd PC strategy game and Everquest, so I'm fairly clueless on the whole gamer side of things.

What I wouldn't mind from you all is recommendations of games to get for someone who is a diehard anime fan.
I'm open to advice on all types of games (RPG, strategy, FPS, etc), just so long as it's the kind of stuff an anime fan would most likely love.

To begin with I've picked myself up Eternal Sonata, as it looks quite nice, so I've just started that.
I'm also quite interested in Valkyria Chronicles (mostly due to its anime adaptation out in the spring), but since it's PS3 only at the mo I'll have to wait till the new year before I pick one of those up (no qualms when it comes to having multiple platforms). I'm also happy to import games, etc, just so long as I know they will play on what I have.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

PS3 is region free. no problems there.

there's the usual games, dragon ball z, Naruto on the Xbox....on Wii: bleach
ps3: Valkyria Chronicles, naruto storm and dbz like i said. apart from that there's not alot of anime-esq games out there. well if you take away the rpg's like Final fantasy and Valkerie games, blue dragon is one you could go for, apart from that if you own a ps2 there's afew more games open to you, digital devil. Hack series and the sort. to be honest there's not a big enough fanbase to sell anime games on a large scale across here.
Importing games might be your best bet....but making sure their in english is a problem and also finding out if Xbox is region free...which im not sure on as i don't own one.

You might like Senko no Ronde (Called Wartech - Senko no ronde). A Vs. shoot 'em up featuring giant robots and some very nice anime artwork.

Battle Fantasia is also getting a Western Release. It's a hi-def 3d fighter, with 2d gameplay and beautiful character artwork.

The xbox isn't region free, PS3 is as is the Nintendo DS and DS Lite (The new DS-i isn't so watch out for that if you pick up handheld gaming)

As for games you could look at the Devil May Cry series (number 4 is also on xbox 360) Eternal Sonata was a good choice, i'm almost completed my second runthough. We really don't get that many anime games compared to other places though in the pipeline though is a Gundam game for 360

Can't complain about a game that features "Fancies Men" as a Male character perk.

As Blackwolf said, the 360 is unfortunately region locked, so importing is out of the question =/ Game wise, there is a fair few i'd suggest actually. Eternal Sonata you've got, i would've suggested that but there we go =p. Naruto: Rise of a Ninja and Broken Bond are available on the 360, RoaN is fairly good, not amazing but its still worth a look into, Broken Bond i couldn't say as of yet though, still to pick it up myself...this is of course provided you like Naruto =p. Gundam Musou is available for the 360 at the moment, if you've heard of Dynasty Warriors, its by the same people who made that and from what i can gather, similar gameplay as well, so that would be a good hack n Slash to look into if your interested.

Outside of the whole anime scene though, there is tonnes i'd recommend to pick up. RPG wise, Last Remnant looks to be promising so go for that, and Lost Oddessy as well, at least i'm enjoying it anyway =p. if your looking for Shooters, Gears of War is one you can't go wrong with, and picking up the Orange Box and/or Bioshock if you can find them maybe a good idea too. Recently out is the new Prince of Persia which looks to be pretty amazing, only reason i have yet to pick it up myself is down to exams. I could suggest loads of others...but i'll only really say look into getting an Xbox Live account and taking a look through what arcade games are available, some are quite addictive =p.

If you don't mind absolutely dire technical issues (frequent loss in frame rate, textures popping out of thin air etc), then I'd also recommend the Last Remnant. And as Arbalest, I would've too mentioned Eternal Sonata should you not have done so yourself. You could also try Infinite Undiscovery--I'm told it's quite good but have yet to play it.

Tales of Vesperia comes out sometime next year for us (spring I think), which should be decent, just as previous Tales of games have been. Final Fantasy XIII also comes out next year.

If you bought a 360 purely for anime-esque/Japanese games games though, then you've most likely wasted your money--the Wii and DS are swimming in J-games.

Anything else that isn't anime/Japanese related and are good: Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, Fallout 3, Fable II, Halo 3, Gears of War 1 + 2, Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts (well I like it) and Prince of Persia (from the half hour I played earlier). I'd recommend that you look into most of these other 360 games. I doubt they'll all take your fancy, but you should be able to find something you like.

Best current gen JRPG. For anyone wondering since we have a lot of Japanese only people, yes you can play it with the Japanese voices on.

Also, DoA and Ninja Gaiden II you may like also.

Many thanks for all the responses! You’ve certainly given me a fair bit to think about ;)

A few responses (apologies for long post, I only get a lunch break to post in):

Luckily that wasn’t the only reason; I have a few friends with 360’s too so it was also for a bit of commonality with them ;) I had been meaning to step into the console market anyway so I’m treating the 360 as a first step :D
To me there always seems to have been a gamer culture running alongside and quite often intermingling with the anime scene in the UK (obviously in Japan the links are considerably more closer), and it’s sometimes been vexing to be left out when conversations drifts off to pure gaming (I still get either bemused or shocked looks when I say I’ve never played a Final Fantasy game).
Other games I picked up at the same time were Soul Calibur IV (so one friend can repeatedly beat me senseless into various walls, etc – plus I’d enjoyed playing it at Ame08), Grid (so another friend can lap me several times whilst I practice driving with my front wheels pointing in several interesting directions), C&C (I’m still a strategist), and ironically as many of you have suggested, DMC4 & Lost Odyssey, so it looks like I’ll look forward to playing those :D

I did mention I play Everquest? *snicker*

Ooh, is that related then to Tales of the Abyss? Greatly enjoying the anime of that! If so, will certainly be getting.

Hmm, think I’ve seen a clip of that before on youtube. Does it have a really hard end boss? Will give it a try; reminds me of my spectrum days ;)

Looking at the other suggestions; Gundam I’m well up for as it looks great fun, so I’ll track that down.
Naruto, erm, will you hate me if some anime prejudices follow through on this one? :?
Final Fantasy XIII - well, got to play one of them sometime ;)
Ninja Gaiden II - friend picked that one up at the same time, so I’ll see if I can borrow it off him after he’s finished with it.
Infinite Undiscovery – looks interesting, will stick it on the list after I finish the current batch.

Cool! I’m probably still planning to get a PS3 as well around feb time anyway, but it’s nice to have my options open ;)
That actually brings me on to a second question, is there a better console to be getting for more anime orientated games? That question is not solely restricted to just what 3 major consoles there are in the UK, but whether I should be looking at getting an imported console version?
I’ve noticed skikes threadabout the lack of backwards compatibility on the PS3, so do wonder what ultimately is the “bestâ€

Yeah that's a complicated question :p I would of joked though that a PS2 would of been best for anime related games but that is also because of its lifespan. DS is looking good at the moment for j-games as well

For anime related games, i'd say your best bet for them at all is any console that isn't an Xbox. PS2 has a big variety, Persona 3 FES is out here at the moment and as Maxon said Persona 4 too, but thats either out in america now, or the 12th(play-asia are saying 12th for it for some reason). Disgaea 1+2 are both on the PS2 and i'd say are both highly recommended if you like turn based strategy, also NIS do have other games like Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom to name a couple which are also strategy and may be more overlooked than some others. Maybe a bit hard to find them now but they could still be lurking about.

DS wise, well since you can import your choices are fairly big, Super Robot Taisen J and W, are good options to start with. Both are strategy based around mecha series, includes a whole bunch like FMP, Mazinger Z, Gundam, Tekkaman, etc. Jump Ultimate Stars as well is a great game, i always found it played a little like Super Smash Brothers. You can also find the likes of The World Ends With You here, that is a brilliant game, well worth a look into.
