AUKN's Best of the Decade

State Alchemist
I thought we could make this slightly more formal than the "best of the year" thread, seeing as no-one seems to have done this last year.

What I would like people to do is PM me their votes, and not put them in this thread until after voting has finished, although I guess using this thread for general banter about some shows would be fun.

For voting, I would like to limit this to shows and movies that had their first airing *in Japan* not before the start of the year 2000. I know that means that we're including slightly more than ten years' worth of shows in a "decade" vote, but I doubt too many people will vote for shows from this year anyway.

If people would like to vote for ten shows, ordered from 1-10, I will collate the results and post them up at the end of the voting period, which I would like to leave open for one month, to give some lurkers the time to see this thread and hopeful contribute their votes even if they don't want to actually post in the forum.

If you have a TV show with multiple seasons that were split up over time, or given different titles, still count that as one entry. So for instance Shakugan no Shana, and Shakugan no Shana Second would count as one vote. If you have something that you think has a really good argument for being two entries (Clannad and After Story already have come up), I'm not going to be too pedantic about it. All movies count individually, unless they are very expressly one movie split into multiple parts (eg. the Rebuild of Evangelion movies would both count separately. Disappearance.... would count separately to the Haruhi TV series).

So, to sum up, send me an ordered list of ten anime that started on or after January 1st 2000, and get that list to me on or before January 31st 2011!

edit: I will call an early end to the voting if I go a full week without receiving any votes. I will post to say if it gets to three days, and then five days, and probably again on the seventh day to allow anyone to say "still thinking, will vote though".

This is going to be quite interesting, as anime has become more exposed over the last decade, so I think a top 10 of previous decades would be easier, and this could be quite difficult. Not to say it shouldn't be done, I just mean that I expect there to be variety compared to other decades.

Either way, I think we might see more series come up over movies for this, as I think shows have had stronger showings this decade in comparison, especially over the last few years.

Looking forward to what the final results turn out to be :)

Oh, and if anyone has a resource that lists what been released since the beginning of 2000 that'd be great :)

If I was guessing, my first google search would be for an "anime database". I'd then go to "anime" on the left, tick "hide synonyms" on the right, and reorder the list by air date. I won't link directly to it, since it's a bit of a "grey" site, I would guess. I wouldn't even really blame a mod if they wanted to edit my post, but it really is most useful list for jogging your memory, and I've been... er... really not very vague, but still.

Alternatively, looking back through chartfag's charts would help, but I believe he is missing charts for 2004-2007. I'm sure other people also have some ideas.

I just went the long route of going on Wiki and looking at each year.

Got a bit of shortlist together. Now to see how much of the stuff I haven't seen that I can power through in a month so I can make an informed list XD

We do know that last year was the end of the decade, no? Tis a good idea, though. Gonna have to put something together.
That's dependant on whether there was a year 0 or the calendar was started from 1.

Well, you don't say the 70s ended with 1980 - the decade ended in 1979. Otherwise the millennium would have been celebrated in the year 2000/1 rather than 1999. Plus these lists were everywhere this time last year.

Actually, the millennium proper was 2000/2001, and the decade does end this year. We celebrated the millennium in 1999/2000 because the numbers were psychologically significant rather than materially correct.

If decades do end in years ending in 9, that would mean that the Christian calendar would have begun with a year 0. There never was a year 0, only a year 1.

But you know what, I'm going to go with psychologically significant rather than materially correct. So, from 2000 to 2010 equals my decade, and who cares if it is 11 years rather than 10.

Typically "*something* of the decade" span from the 0-9 and best of the decade lists were announced Jan 2010 for almost everything imaginable.

However, seeing as there was not one for this forum last year, I don't think there is any harm in doing one slightly late and including this years shows =]

Time to get to work =]

That's not correct at all. A decade is just a span of 10 years, it doesn't matter what the dates are during it. Same with a millennium and a century.

If you're wanting the span of time contained in the 201st decade since year 1, then yes that would be 2001-2010.

I managed to work out my top ten. I think.

From around 260 titles to a long list of around 60, and a short list of 30. It was made slightly easier by having some of my fave shows pre-2000. Don't have to count Lain or Cowboy Bebop. Still narrowing it down was a bitch, and I'm still not certain about the final order.

Here are some of the titles that caused me emotional distress to leave out...

Baccano!, Eden of the East, Beck - Mongolian Chop Squad, The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya, Millennium Actress, Moribito Guardian of the Spirit, Noein, Ouran High School Host Club, Paranoia Agent, Samurai Champloo, Wolf's Rain, Welcome to the NHK

and I was almost as torn over

Black Lagoon, Ergo Proxy, Fruits Basket, Haibane-Renmei, Kino's Journey, Le Chevalier D'Eon, Niea Under 7, and Shingu: Secret of the Stellar Wars.

Still, top 10 PM'd

This isn't about referencing/encapsulating a cultural time period. This is about a correct date interval. Upon some quick Googling, I found the calendar started at 1. Therefore each decade goes 1-10, not 0-9, so using 2010 as the end of the decade is correct.

There would no no year zero because of different dating systems. When a baby is born, it doesn't start at 1. The actual answer to this will never be known, however. And of course it is about encapsulating a time period - its a Best Of list, we're making a compilation of the best stuff in a 10 year time period.

Also, if we go by your rules, we miss out on the Year 2000. Not sure if anyone has used the year 2000, but their list may be incorrect if we're doing it that way.

Thank you to everyone who has voted so far, already up to double figures and I was wondering initially if it would reach that in total. :)

More fun than discussion about what constitutes a decade, I wager.
lol, indeed.

I thought I had been fairly broad in my first post as far as both admitting that there was a lack of accuracy in my describing this with the word "decade", and also in providing my reasoning for it, but ah well.
