<a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interview/2009-06-05/funimation-discusses-leaked-episodes">ANN interviewed Funimation's CEO Gen Fukunaga</a>. Here a few highlights:

<b>About the leaked episodes:</b><i> "After going over the sequence of events, we know that human error and flaws in our internal processes are ultimately to blame."</i>
<b>Posible actions against groups / individuals who copy episodes from them and upload to torrent sites:</b><i> We aren't going to call out any specific group. Such groups generally operate undercover. Only handle names are given and groups like to keep their secrets. It is difficult to track these groups down, but not impossible. We are currently gathering evidence against any group involved in this practice and are taking the necessary steps for enforcement of our rights.</i>
<b>What's the impact on legal streaming?</b><i>Overall, this event and the continuing problem of the illegal download and distribution of anime series could make many licensors resistant to the simulcast of their series. We understand how serious a concern these leaks are for our Japanese partners- to the broadcasters, sponsors, and consortium members. We are confident that we have implemented changes which address the security issues, but we must work to regain their trust. </i>

hmmmmm yes i know who said fansub group is, and tbf atleast other fansubbers actually work to get their fansubs done, where as said group is just blatently stealing other peoples hard work

FFS Spyro, unellmay... Just go and make a kenshinboy hate thread already, I'm bored of hearing about the guy. You're only giving him the attention he's after anyway...

I could understand why having the episode leaked before it's due to air would make the Japanese companies uneasy, but why tie this in to the existing download problem? Most fansub groups record the episodes when they air on Japanese TV - so are they going to take their shows off TV too in order to stop "the continuing problem of illegal download and distribution"? How about they just stop making them altogher? That would really put a stop to it!

They need to be dragged, kicking and screaming if necessary towards a business model for the 21st Century, and their international partners need to be the ones to do it. Be more demanding! If they don't secure distributors then they aren't going to make any money in foreign countries - Make them aware of this and use it to your advantage! All this fawning over them and talk of "regaining their trust" just puts them in an even greater position of power which they will use to simply carry on the status quo - Which almost anyone (except the licensors themselves, it seems) can see isn't going to work in today's economy.

This recent article has resulted in another ANN fansub thread. Poor Zac is at the end of his tether.

On the plus side:
Gen Fukunaga said:
We hope that our partners understand that we share the same goal: act in the best interests of the original creators of each intellectual property we license, and that includes ensuring that our industry has a commercial future in North America and other English-speaking countries.

i think they're on about something different that what you're reading it as.

It's not the issue of fansubbing, even fast subbers take atleast a day to get a quality Raw and sub sorted out. But that certain groups are litterly just Getting a bad quality Raw, and adding on the funimation fansubs to it.

Where as normal fansubbers get translators to translate the shows and add there own subs (i've never seen a group with a like for like translation of 1 episode) they're taking someone elses hard work and actually trying to profit from it.

What they're doing is no different from bootlegging

If that's the case then I agree that's a bad practice Ryo, but "the continuing problem of the illegal download and distribution" implies that which is already going on, he didn't say "this new problem which has come to light with the advent of simulcasting". So at the very least it was a poor use of language.

Plus, didn't they anticipate that happening, even a little? It's just one of those things that reason dictates was bound to happen. If something is made easier for people, they're going to take that easy path. I never really know how they can tell their subs are being used anyway - I mean if two people are translating something from one language to another shouldn't it yeild the same result?

Having read through that, it appears that Funi know when and where they where at fault and admitted to it, but again, it does feel a tad late for it. I mean i didn't realise myself that Phantom was being leaked from episode 6 onwards, which they should have been aware of ages ago, and as such, i think the whole FMA and One Piece problems should, and could have been avoided. At least they have implimented new security protocols now, and only plan to put episodes up minutes before, but surely they should have done that in the first place? I mean, they had the whole simulcast planned for FMA before it aired, so with such a high profile series, you would expect they would up their security knowing full well what many groups could do.
