Death Scythe
After reading both volumes of this (some time after I'd seen the OVA) I was left a little disappointed with it.

The artwork style wasn't a problem at all, which surprised me a little. In fact it was pretty cool, and there were only a few frames I really had to squint at to work out what was going on. The only problem was the storyline itself: it's been a while since I watched the OVA, but if a manga story has to rely on the reader having seen the anime that it's based on, something has gone wrong with the writing.

Maybe it would have benefited from being a volume longer perhaps, since the ending was a bit sudden (I think the common term for this is gain-axed ;) ). I'll give the second volume another read, but even thouggh the anime was pretty random in places I think this was a wasted opportunity in places.

What did the rest of you make of it?

Didn't think it was too bad. Found that it made more sense the more times it was read.

Not bad value for money then, I guess...

I've read Volume 1 of it at the library, i liked the art but i really didn't understand it at all and I felt like kind of a n00b, do you have to see the OAV to understand the manga? @_@

Same. I had to read it at least twice before coming to terms with the plot! The anime is slightly easier to follow, but you still need to concentrate. The episodes are brilliant, but it isn't in my top ten.

After reading through it a second time it makes more sense but I still prefer the animated version - it tries too hard in being 'random' I think. Still, it's worth a read if you enjoyed OVA beforehand.

The Manga wasn't as good. The story was condenced and quite different in places. But since it only a couple of volumes. if you liked the anime, get the manga.

I found it quite confusing to read. By I read both and then a little later read them both again, and it made much more sense second time around. :)

(reading more than once is good value for money too!)

I didn't understand it at all! =| Though I haven't seen the animation, so maybe I would enjoy it better after that.

On a completely unrelated note, I'm selling both volumes in the marketplace for a good price. Now that I have shamelessly advertised...

A friend of mine told me that you won't really understand the manga until you've watched the animation. I'm not sure if there's any truth to her words but I'm not that bothered since I've already seen the animation so if it's true I have nothing to worry about... I hope.

I feel it’s like a companion book for one of those BBC documentary series. The book is the same as the series but different enough that its worth buying and you get something new from it.

Anyone picking up the R1 Ultimate Edition boxset?

I have no choice really, I can't stand the ghosting on the R2UK/R4's (that are a a result of the NTSC-PAL converted **** transfers) and the R1 individual volumes are all OOP.

The Pillows tracks hardly ever leave my playlists, such an awesome band.
