First DVD releases should include bonus over later box sets?

Apart from getting a DVD release earlier there isn't much other incentive to buy first DVD release over later box sets. Especially when buying the later box sets normally works out a lot cheaper.

So should the first DVD release always come with some kinda of bonus extra which won't appear in later releases?

Just an inexpensive item like for example:

  • Artwork Card/Postcard/Bookmark
    Booklet
    Badge
    Stickers
Anime inspired cards to collect/reward scheme (i.e like Club Nintendo) through all Distributors releases.

Hmm, yeah, probably. I usually wait for the boxsets, if distributors want more people to buy the singles, they're really gonna need something like this.

I agree that there is little insentive. Not even artwork anymore (I brought the 4 Romeo x Juliet singles, which had pretty bad front covers, then saw the boxset one later...)

Hell, maybe even a voucher for £5 off the next volume from selected retailers would be encouraging to some (Especially Beez...)

Yup, this is (as a lot of people probably know) the de facto standard in Japan, and a huge part of the collector mentality there (especially with certain first-press extras). Something I am very much in favor of.

Which is why they're being phased out for boxset a only aproach. The time advantage being non-existant over American imports.
We can't strip extras form the boxsets like the US do as we can affrod to re author the disks for the boxset. Worse we get the cheap boxset version anyway.
Extras need to be much bigger to make up for the disparity of paying twice as much for almost no benefits. The price difference is bigger than between Japanese regular and LEs (normaly about £10). It's at the hardback artbook/OST scale

To make the question clearer: This is about having cheap physical extra's on first releases to give more incentive to buy them than the later cheaper box set re-release.

Even though vol.1-4 of Naruto Shippuden & Soul Takers are essiantial box sets to begin with. Not long after they are released another even cheaper re-released box set appears containing all 4 volumes. So should the first DVD's releases like them receive bonuses compared to later re-releases is the question I am asking.

The best way to get me not to wait for box sets is not to release box sets right after the singles for previous series. And not to release singles for shows I already bought as box sets the better part of a decade ago (sorry MVM!).

A cheap bonus like a bookmark or sticker wouldn't change my purchasing, but something more substantial might. Chipboard boxes were a nice incentive but obviously they have completely failed in this country - I'm digging Funi's latest swing at LEs though and have picked up quite a few of their part 1 + box releases since they started the push.

Singles in general are a pain. If nothing else they take up masses of shelf space and for series I really love, they make the wait between episodes difficult. I'm lazy so I'd rather wait and grab the lot all at once for most things.

Wasn't it looking like the single volume releases were being phased out by most publishers?

The only show I ever fastidiously tracked down single volumes of was Gundam OO. After that, never again.

think we're looking at the 12/13 ep singles for 24+ ep series. Which are still much more expensive for not much (if any, US boxsets can come first) time saving

13 ep sets are ok as that means you only only really have to wait for two releases, 4 ep releases for a 24 eo show is just plain wrong and I have never bought one.

I agree with rui, a little book mark or something really isn't going to change how I feel about them.
