Finally watched Spirited away from start to finish...

...and personally I thought it blew huge chunks. Before i'd only seen about an hour or so of the movie and didn't think much of it but I'd thought i'd give it the benefit of the doubt and pick up the DVD(it was only £4.99). But my god. I only bought it today and i'm already going to take it back tomorrow and try and exchange it for something else. Really not my kind of movie. The animation quality was pretty flawless but as with most Ghibli movies I hated a lot of the character designs and the whole story was just too fantasy driven for me(some people like that, but now I know that I really do not). Really couldn't stand it.

If you like it then that's dandy but I really needed to vent on that.

Same here.

The only Ghibili film I like is Whisper of the Heart and I don't even think that was directed by Miyazaki.

I think there are just certain people who get to an age where "fun for the whole family" type stuff doesn't appeal anymore.

I'm also not a big fan of fantasy.

I have to say that Spirited Away was overrated for me, bit like The Godfather.

I did enjoy Castle of Cagliostro, but thats a totally different type of film to the normal Ghibli film.
Princess Mononoke was a fairly decent film, just most Ghibli films are on the 2 hour mark and its just tooo long.

It was something to watch and enjoy, it shouldn't be taken seriously. The voice acting for the dub was good too. [Has the DVD. >_>]

I didn't take it seriously... I just thought it was a bad movie. And yes it was way too long. I resisted the temptaion to just turn it off several times but since my brother was there he made me leave it on(he's 9 and he didn't like it much either). I think we both preffered Castle in the Sky over this(I thought it was.. okish but my brother loved it).

Where as i would say 90% of all films that are 2 hours long are still too short for the story.

But each to their own.

I aint bothered how long a film is as long as its told the story and been good. but like pirates 2 just went on and on and on. dint like it.

films can also be short though as well like blood the last vampire and tht really winds me up

Well I liked it, thought it was a really good movie, loved the characters especially the old/man/spider guy who runs the fires.

Yep, each to their own. Personally, I love most Ghibli output, as they are generally fantastic artwork, great fantasy stories, often with a subtle dark side to them.

Some people will probably find them too family orientated and prefer their blood and guts or scifi movies/series instead. But, that's their choice and after all, the beauty of being human and living in a democratic society, is the ability to think for yourself and not have to comply with other peoples views.

Again, everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

In MINE however, I thought that Spirited Away, although totally overated, was a really pleasing and enchanting work. I've watched it probably 10 times over, which is hugely rare for a movie, and still like it.

It's probably worth noting though that I have some nostalgic bias to Spirited Away, as it was my introduction into anime in the first place!

Never have truer sentiments been written.

I loved Spirited Away personally.

I watched it the other day after watching 'Saw' (the first one) and realised that I can actually enjoy two polar opposites regarding human nature (the pro-positive [Spirited Away] and pro-negative [Saw] - or is it the other way round? :?:  :D ).

But back to the point, I enjoy Studio Ghibl films partly because there normally optimistic affairs (even Grave of the Fireflies had a touching ending when you see the two children re-united as spirits - something that would probably send Richard Dawkin's - or rather his genes - spinning in his grave, so to speak!).

Err, indeed.

Again, I don't thrive on blood and guts In fact I usually try to avoid that. For a truely fantastic fantasy series I usually watch Haibane Renmei.

i rented this movie from my college library, and after watching, i guess i too am in the same boat as ''WTFDaveMustaine''. i found it very boring. sure the animation was sweet, but other than that, it was lame.
also the hype and stuff about all these 'Ghibli' and 'Miyazaki' was another thing that also put me off this film.

You've given me a "good" idea for a new thread (though I use the word "good" loosely on this one). :D

The guy in Virgin let me trade it for KARAS. Looks more interesting. Even if there is a character called 'Yurine'. XD
