Elfen Lied question

Since Paul locked the topic just as I was about to post a response which wasn't a purposely poor joke I started a new thread with a serious answer to the question (maybe Paul could just merge this with the other and reopen it).

Anyway from what I can find out the hand gesture could be a variation of a mudra which is a symbolic hand gesture used in Hindu iconography and Buddhism. I could be wrong but there are so many variations that it's highly possible. The closest one I could find however was the 'Mrigaseersham' which could mean 'the supreme being'. Very fitting considering that it's only Lucy in the series seen using that hand gesture.

EDIT by Paul: Done. Removed all the junk.

Are there any more episodes to Elfen Lied other than the 13 ova's? i'm quite enjoying it, the storyline is excellent.

There's an additional episode that hasn't been officially released in America or the UK. Rather suprising since it reveals some interesting plot points that were never really developed during the run of the series and after watching it a lot of things became clear that I originally missed.

In my opinion it was a stupid thing not to include it anywhere on the ADV releases.

I haven't seen it =0 elaborate pls.

I've just finished watching episode 13 and I can't belive its over and done with already, i feel this could have benifited so much more from say 26 episodes or atleast another set of OVA's. There is so much they can do with the characters and lots of questions that are left unanswered.

There are so many things i like about Elfen Lied but now i get the feeling of "is that it?" I guess its true when they say the start that shines twice as bright only shines for half as long.

I would seriously recommend this to anyone and everyone.

Yeah, I got the same feeling after I finished the series too :(

a 26 episode run would've been great :(

I heard that the manga was not finished when they were making the anime so that could be why it felt like it needed more. Same thing happened to hellsing. Didn't realise there was an extra episode though, think that will now be googled!

Hmmm. Hinduism and an all powerful god with multiple arms.

ZOMGWTFNOOB?! *Brain has cracked a clog in the works...*
I said it once, I'll say it again... My opinion is a joke/junk? If he can select certain comments to be deleted, then what exactly was wrong with mine? :x

Anyways, back on topic. Basically, my opinion was similar to that of what WTFDave said, the hand gesture being part of a religious/cultural/expressive symbolism.
It probably is more likely Hinduism, since the girls have those vectors, which may come from the image of Shiva, or even Brahma and Vishnu. (Shiva is most likely because she's the Destroyer.)

Sorry to nit-pick, but Shiva is a 'he' and is both the destoryer and reproducer / creator. :)

All the more reason to make a second series, god i wish they would. Apparently the anime only covers volumes 1-6 of the manga which leaves another 6 or so volumes so there is plenty of material to cover. Such a shame this is a true work of art.

Also if you notice in the last two episodes when she hugs Kouta she is doing the same hand movement.

I know about the male part, but the whole multiple arms thing is still present.
Just did some research on wikipedia, and apparently (going from what we were taught in school) I was only refering to the "Trimurti."

I related the gesture to Shiva because... well, Lucy seems to like killing everything around her and I've always thought of Shiva as just the destroyer. (Useless R.E classes.)
Sorry for the mix-up. ^_^' Hopefully you get the basic idea though... (Maybe she's more like Durga... )

That's why I thought it may also be an expressive response, like it's comfortable for her.

Also, does anyone know if the extra episode "episode 14" comes with the dvd's in the box set? i've looked but most just say the 1-13 episodes.

It's not so much episode 14 but more like episode 11.5 since it takes place during episode 11 and no it's not included on any official English language release like I said earlier in the thread.

Yes and no. It depends if by more material you mean more fanservice - there's plenty of that. If by more material you mean a continuation of the story, then no. General opinion is that it was a good decision for the anime to end where it did.

Oh, and the additional episode/OVA/whatever isn't really worth it.

I get where you are coming from but i think they should move it more into Harem Anime now, there is enough material left to develop the characters etc.

But yes the ending was good but i felt the series just wasnt long enough.

Edit: i've yet to see episode 14 but from what i've heard its a good filler of information.

In terms yes, but thats just my rubbish english. What i mean is after episode 13 there is enough left to turn it into say love hina or a tenchi muyo. We don't really know in anime terms what happens after the last scene in episode 13 but there is enough to create say another 13 episode series.
