Hi! Thanks first of all to everyone who helped me when I first started getting into Neon Genesis Evangelion. Second, apologies to everyone who is tired of the subs vs dubs debate. This is not supposed to carry the general debate on, I just wondered what your preferences were regarding these specific DVDs. Last night I watched the first platinum episode in Japanese with subtitles, but wondered what your preferences were.

So far nobody has claimed to have a telepathic connection. Not surprising I guess, but it would have been cool.

Still, despite the small number of results, early indications are that subtitles are favoured over dubs for this particular anime.

I went with the subs; it's Evangelion, a classic anime series, it should be watched in it's original language.
 
Sub, no question about it. Tiffany Grant does a horrible job as Asuka and Allison Keith is an equally irritating Misato. The guy who does the voice for Gendo in the series was very good though.

At the very start of the first episode where the Angel smacks the helicopter made me actually burst out laughing in the dub. Also when Shinji first see's the Eva and is screaming his little head off in the dub. "WHY'S IT SO DARK IN HERE?!?! ARGH!". Not needed.

But seriously, I like both equally, dub Gendo makes up for lack of Asuka ownage.
 
I watched it dubbed while it was on TV and recently watched it all the way through in Japanese with subs and found that I really like either.
 
I watched the series first time around dubbed and was impressed with Allison Keith and Tristan McAvery as Misato and Gendo respectively. The rest of them aren't too great in retrospect but at the time I hadn't heard any other VAs to compare them with.

These days I always watch it subbed - I have to highlight Megumi Ogata's performance as Shinji as one of the finest I've heard from ANY animated show.
 
Amanda Winn Lee is not as good a Rei as Megumi Hayashibara; but, despite the "authentic" issues, I've seen the series a couple of times in both English and Japanese and, honestly, with particular reference to the last few episdoes, I feel I get more out of it if I watch in English.

It's bad enough when you're reading the subtitles while trying to watch this plethora of fast moving images, and also trying to understand the narrative (or if there even is one). That's just too much effort for me.

Ha! That's brilliant, three with a telepathic connection, great stuff! I'm also glad there was a vote in the "understanding Japanese" category.

Anyway, back to business, it looks like an even split between dubs and subs now for Evangelion, suggesting its a better dub than most. Besides a few irritating voices, it sounds good. I think that personally, to avoid confusion, I'll watch the rest of the series with subs and then start again sometime with dubs. Its all been very enjoyable and interesting so far.
