I believe the explanation for Future Mai's (physical) age is that Pilaf's gang mace the same botched wish in the alternate universe as in the main one. It was just before Piccolo's death during the Android crisis, I believe it was an extra manga chapter or something which I know don't live up with the anime but its the best we have.

You're right, I remember that now... although the manga and anime often differ, as the anime offers no explanation that will have to do :)
 
Mai as well as Android 17 are the two characters who really got the most added to them in this show especially when you compare then to where the their characters were before the series.
 
Very true, I still don't know where Toriyama pulled the idea of Pilaf and his gang as children from...
