Dragon Ball Box?

Death Scythe
This is basically just a question.

I just stumbled upon some pictures of the Dragon Ball manga (released by Viz) on AAA Anime (R1 wholesalers), and quite a few of the Dragon Ball manga pictures have a stick saying "Free Display Box Offer" (picture).

So my question is really if anyone has got a volume with this sticker on, and/or has sent off to get a box, and if so what form does it take?

This is quite an interesting find, if I may say so myself =). I wonder if it's some cheap plastic outer, or a proper display!

There were several boxes, I think. They didn't look half bad, actually. I remember the original Dragonball had two boxes: one for volumes 1 -7 and another for 8-16. Not sure what became of the Dragonball Z boxes.

Basically, they were described as collectible display boxes to "enhance and protect" your Dragonball collection.

Edit: For the first box, you needed the original entry form from volume 1, as well as the validation coupons from volumes 2 to 7. One was required to send those off with $4.50 for postage and packaging.

Ah I see. Interesting stuff.

This is the most odd find I've come across in a long time...
I wonder if they did this for any other series. Makes you wonder really.
I guess then again, this was a good few years ago.

Anyhow, many thanks for the replies!

Any idea what form the box takes, or have you just got the sticker kind of thing? :p
I only saw the B+W photos they had in the books, but they were pretty much like the slipcases you get with DVD boxsets...didn't look anything too fancy to be honest.

Pretty sure my local FP was selling one a few years ago...just never really thought to check it out. =/

For some reason I think manga is worse than anime for new people to get into. With anime box sets are generally available for most older series of course if you want the special editions of most things you need to be there when they come out or be willing to trawl the net/ebay. But with manga it is quite often impossible to get hold of the first volumes of some series as evidenced by walking into most book shops that stock manga and looking at the shelves and seeing many of the titles starting at volume 3 or 4, or even later for some long running titles.

That's very true. Even a few years ago when I found out about Tokyopop's proper chipboard manga boxsets, the Rayearth ones were gone, luckily I got hold of the two Card Captor Sakura ones, and the Ragnarok one though =)! There've been loads of them. Apparently there was a Fruits Basket one only through US retailers. There was a Chobits one that sold out years before I found about it as well, which held all eight volumes. There was also a Cowboy Bebop one, which just went out of print before I found out about it (although I think it was flipped manga).

wow thats wierd because my local comic book store is pretty good for holding all of a series or at least all the earliest parts of a series.
This is slighty off topic but the best book shop I ever went in for selling manga was in Amsterdam called "The American Book Store" and it had about 2-3 complete copies of many series without boxsets.

I have got the second cardcaptor sakura box set I would have got the first one but the price is really expensive on Amazon

I realise now that I am a book "noob". I have no idea why things are titled as first or second editions, and what's so different about them. They don't seem to be listed in books properly either. I also know from reading Tokyopop's forum that they change certain things as soon as they spot mistakes (i.e someone reported an error in their forums and they said they'd change it the next print run or whatever). So I wonder why people pay over the top prices for first editions of books and so on o_O.
At least that's how the novel market works (I know it applies a bit to manga as well with the whole first and second editions).

I'm not making much sense here, but there's also the fact that some earlier volumes of manga series (i.e I was looking down the list on Up1 (who I'm sure must be wrong somewhat) for Kekkaishi, and volumes 2-4 or something were out of print, then the rest are in print). It's all so confusing. I think I'm going to have to spend quite a while researching all the ins and outs of books.

Viz are incredibly annoying with this as well, as they don't list quite a few of their titles on their website, and certainly not any special editions. I found that there was a 5000 limited print run of the first volume of the Dragonball manga, (I guess before it was right-to-left format) and the cover was foil embossed. I wonder just how many other special things there are like this.

I'm planning on e-mailing Viz to query some of these things, about their out-of-print titles, and what titles they aren't listing on their website. I'll probably get no reply but it's worth a shot. I'll post here if and when I get a reply.

I'd like to see what they've had to offer in the past. Although it'll probably make me sad that i missed them.
