Do you bargain hunt for games?

Since I got my XBOX, I have been going to various shops to try and find bargains (NEW/Preowned).

I try to find older releases of Games, as you can get some classic for £5 or less if you look hard.

And its always easier to find bargains, especially if the next gen of the console you have is out (XBOX 360), as people will get rid of their current gen to save up for the next gen.

I always bargain hunt. Why pay ??30-40 for a game when it goes half price 3-6 months later? (Unless I really wanted the game)

I don't have any game shops near me, so I don't get those bargain bin prices! I always scour the net on eBay or game forums, sometimes haggling works.

I find that if you wait long enough for PC games, you can pick many of them up for £5 or less off Amazon marketplace. I've started doing that with Games which interest me, but not enough to get them as soon as everyone else can.

Usually I won't pay more than £15 for a game (hence why I play older games for the first time LONG after everyone's completed it!) but I will make exceptions... Namely Final Fantasy's which I'll buy on the day of release! Saw Dragon Quest retailing at £25 in one shop... Might splash out

if its a game i have been after for so long then yes i will probably spurt out the normal price for it, other wise i may wait for the price to drop before i buy it

bargain hunting for games is a nescessity, especailly if you are after rare ones ("rarehunting" as I like to call it) I managed to pick up Blood omen: legacy of kain for £3 a few weeks ago.

Rarely but anything when it first comes out, games or dvd's, mainly for the bank balance, but also with PC games if you wait a about 1/2 a year they will have fixed all the bugs for the game, and often added a few extra levels or features to the game.

Can't believe I've missed this old topic before!

Do I bargain hunt for games?

More often than not, yes I do (though I never buy second-hand - one of those things), but on some occasions I'm willing to be a corporate lap-dog and purchase full-price.

It doesn't happen often, but some games I have such a high anticipation level for and know without question their quality won't be in doubt that I'll fork out the full "whack" for it (Okami and Final Fantasy XII being two upcoming examples).

But as I said, its a few and far between occurence, and when one manages to get brand-new games like Yakuza for £10 and Killer7 for £5 it motivates you to try and continue that cost effective trend. :)

I always bargain hunt for games why pay full price at the first place you come too. I always shop around online stores or just ask Hovis as he tends to find brilliant bargains

Of course I'll pay a higher price if its the only place that has it in stock, but only if its a game I MUST have or if its a Limited Edition version

I bargin hunt to the point that I'll get it £10 cheaper online than in store, but thats about it. Gaming consumes my life to put it short. I won't buy limited edition box sets.etc unless its a god of a game (Halo 2 when it first came out).

Put it this way, up till I bought a 360 I never bought games that I actually owned a magazine review of (and I keep mags for months), they're too expensive. That's despite the fact that I almost solely buy new so I know I've got media that will last.

That has (very temporarily) changed with the 360, as I traded a lot of the family's excessive crappo DVD collection for Viva Pinata at Blockbuster, then traded more DVDs, Viva Pinata and some other games for Call of Duty 3 and Ice Planet. Also, I got Dead Rising for £25 from the Play sale, and it's still often discussed and in the charts.

Now that's done with, it's back to cheapo games. A game plays no worse for £20 than it does at £40 or £50. Once you get used to staggering your purchases, you've always got something dropping down to a lower price band, IE you're doing what everyone else is doing just with a 6-month delay. Put off buying a new console until the first wave of cheap games comes around (that's what I've done with the 360), then you can take it from there.

360 games bought cheap from Play recently: (£50 each RRP)

Blazing Angels £18
Condemned: Criminal Oranges £15
Rumble Roses XX £15
The Unit £15
Dead Rising £25

Look at Bully/Canis Canem, it's only been a few months and it's £13 new.

Promo versions of games are regularly available on ebay. I bought Siren 2 for the PS2 weeks ago for £3.70, it had only been out a few months, this was a brand new promotional copy in a CD single case. Samurai Jack.. paid about £3 for that. Paid £13 for Atelier Iris: Azoth of Destiny on promo when it was just out, paid the same for Dragon Quest when that had just been released. Why pay more? Only downside to promos is that, obviously, you can't trade them and either have to sell privately or keep them, but at these prices I'll keep em.

I'm currently waiting for Samurai Warriors 2 on the 360 to take a tumble, likewise I'll be snapping up Okami when the price drops off. Give it a try, you'll be amazed at how much further your money goes AND end up with a whopping collection.

Ooh, one last thing, remember to trade your unwanted games sooner rather than later whilst they retain some value, also make sure you SHOP AROUND, one chain of gamestores might have dropped the value of an ageing game whereas another won't have done - if the price is wrong then keep hold of it and try elsewhere.

I used to play offline all the time, since I didn't have broadband. Since then I've got BB and I play online much more than offline. I find with bargin hunting is sure you get it half price a couple months later, but by then the community online has died down, less hype and its generally not as much fun as it is when there is more people on it.

One thing the internet has been great for has been purchasing video games (even all-new releases) at discounted prices (though that also counts towards CDs and DVDs too).

Agreed, I don't think I currently buy any games instore anymore, too much hassle to drive into town, park the car then search store to store in the col, wet british weather for the game I want at the best price, I'd much rather just go online in my comfy living room and shop there.

On top of that McIcy, high street retailers are less likely to stock rarer games and even when they do, more often than not (though not all the time), the price is more than it should be.

I went into Virgin after I finished work today and was quite appalled at the lack of choice there was.
