Synopsis

Lucy, a beautiful young mutant, is bred by the government to be the ultimate weapon. Armed with unfathomable powers, she escapes her handlers, but loses her memory in the process. Fortunately, our young waif is taken in by two well-meaning students. Now, with government killers on her trail, the disposition of a five year old, and a hair trigger for ultraviolence, Lucy and her young friends must unravel the dark secret of her legacy before it's too late.

101 Films has also revealed that they will no longer be looking after The Place Promised In Our Early Days.

That actually looks really nice .. Still unsure on the pricing though :/ Bit steep for me right now.

I wonder what happened with The Place Promised In Our Early Days? Was really looking forward to that.

Oh, so 101 Films are setting up a whole anime label? I thought it was just a one off.

That release does look absolutely beautiful (and I would like a poster) but I already own the old ADV boxset and this doesn't contain the OVA.

The synopsis is incorrect in one important area though: Lucy and the other diclonius weren't bred by the government; they're born not created. Lucy lived in an orphanage before she was captured, but of course you wouldn't know that without the OVA (Even though the main series does show parts of her life before her capture).

A... digipack? Well, at least 101 are putting in some effort to justify the higher than average retail price. The front cover is suffering from a severe case of logo-itis, though.

That is gorgeous, but I own the other version....so can't really justify owning two copies.

Gutted to hear about 'The Place Promised In Our Early Days' I was just about to pre order that :(

The wrong details I see are:
- Lucy being bred by the government, which I covered in my previous post.
- The government killers bit. I don't think it was ever said whether or not Kakuzawa's facility was state or private owned.
- Hair trigger?

Everything else is just a super vague description of the show.

I was looking forward to PPIOED. Oh well, maybe it's for the best. Now Anime Limited can pick it up and put it on BluRay (you know you want to Andrew  )
Elfen Lied is looking a lot better than I was expecting, still a lot of money for an old show even with a poster and fancy box though.

Wow, that wins the prize for most beautiful packaging for the ugliest, most repugnant show.

Seriously, if there's a show that deserved pinball flippers, it's this one.

I should point out that

a) I was quoting from the press release, and
b) I've yet to see this series, so I'm not aware of how accurate or inaccurate the description was.

Elfen Lied does seem to attract an inordinate amount of hate. Obviously everyone's entitled to their own opinion, and I don't like it to the extent that I think there's nothing wrong with it at all, but I guess I never saw whatever it is others see who find it that objectionable. It seemed to me almost entirely a story about the kindnesses and cruelties people are capable of, especially in relation to strangers - The damage they're able to do to each other when they don't realise (or don't care) the extent of the harm they're doing to someone who then has to suffer the consequences of their actions, contrasted with the help they're willing to offer to people they barely know.

I have to agree with Ayase in that I don't get why Elfen Lied receives so much hate. It's not a great series by any means, but it's not a bad one. I see it as incredibly symbolic and artistic series. Things like Nyu's child like disposition, the diclonius' natural instinct to kill and how those natural states are overthrown through experience. Like when Nyu reverts to her Lucy identity and remembers the treatment she received and how after being shown love by Kurama, Nana becomes no different to a normal girl, then there's Mariko who has seen nothing but isolation.

sooooooooooo getting this

iv already got the other release but il get this one since its got the OVA with it
It doesn't have the OVA. We asked them about it, but they confirmed that it doesn't (probably because they're using ADV's old masters and although they licensed the OVA, it was never released).

This time next year, I fully expect Elfen Lied to be selling for a fiver in The Works, following 101 Films one and only flirtation with anime. Seen it all before. Unrealistic expectations leading to red-faced withdrawals.

This. The Place Promised In Our Early Days being cancelled (was a reason ever given?) is certainly not a good omen. This re-release certainly looks nice, but sans the OVA and a relatively high RRP vis-a-vis many other UK anime releases, I can't see Elfen Lied selling like hotcakes.

Any info floating about regarding other releases they have planned - live-action, for instance? It'd be interesting to see if their utilising similar methods for other products, ie. high RRP, 'posh' packaging.

Best of luck to 101 Films, but I can see this going up like the Hindenburg.

I dunno, I like my morality tales to not have a shot of a pre-teen naked on all fours (on top of other things) if I can entirely get away with it.
