I feel sorry for him, when I went to uni I lost everything and then again a few years ago when my PC got hit by lightning, luckily all the good stuff is backed up onto a separate HDD so I still have the best of the best stuff

Your PC got hit by lightning?

Did the insurance cover Acts of God?

House got hit, but it took out 2 tv's, 3 dvd players , 1 vcr, cooker, microwave, sky box, tv splitter in attic, and my beloved pc.

Luckily the insurance company replaced the lot in a week, and instead of me getting the sane pc I told them it was custom so they told me to just send the bill when I built one... heaven I got to build one 3x more powerful than the last.

Meh, some of us who download fansubs actually DO go and buy the series when it gets licensed. I'm one of them, the only stuff i have are fansubs and scanlated manga.

It's still pirating none the less but a few of my favourite series haven't been licensed here and i doubt they ever will.

That's fair enough, but crying about losing such material, which you never had a legal entitlement to in the first place, is just plain wrong to me. If it was legitimately purchased digital videos (which people keep saying is the future of legitimate anime distribution), music, etc. , I'd be more sympathetic (this is why I prefer to have a shiny disc I can hold in my hand and then convert into whatever digital medium I want...although that doesn't stop someone stealing all your DVDs, which is what happened to me last year...).

[Happosai]

i know what you mean but still i do have more important stuff than fansubed and scanslated material.
i mean i have lost all of my current college essays and coursework i have been working on during the holidays.

Also - i have found a program that can actually retrieve files from the HD even if it has been formateed a good few times.
so i tried it and to my friggin suprise i have found most of the files i want back!!!
but the problem is, is that to recover it i must friggin purchase the whole program which costs over $120...which is too much!
and i am so close to getting my files back....sigh
if anyone is curious the programe is called Diskinternals partition recovery 1.8

if anyone here knows of any programs that does the same thing but is for free then let me know....

Yeah, stuff like that *is* something to cry about losing.

Formatting disks usually just erases the table of files but leaves the acutal data intact (similar thing with 'corrupt' memory cards in digital cameras, etc.) and you can use a tool to either locate a backup file table on the disk, or detect the files individually and copy them to another disk -- whatever you do, though, *don't* write anything to the disk prior to trying to recover data off it, or you'll most likely be overwriting some of the data you want to recover.

I'm sure there are freeware disk recovery tools out there, but I'm just about to leave work and won't be home tonight, so won't have a chance to look for you until tomorrow.

Everything I have on my computer I hav copyed and saved to disk just incase stuff like this happens 8)

But I feel sorry for you loseing all your coursework

But what about the porn he lost?

what is it with you guys and porn?

It is our higher calling

You have problems :p

Do you have to do all that course work you lost all over again
thankfully i wont have to re-do ALL of it again...because i have an earlier draft saved on my college computer, so i can access my files remotely using the college's remote access service via the web.....

but still.....the fact that i have to do what i did...again....just pisses me of

Here ya go...use a Knoppix linux live CD or DVD to recover data (you need to download a CD/DVD image file from the first link given on that page and burn it to a CD/DVD, then boot your PC from it and follow the instructions).

thanks for the help but i already found a prgramme late last night to recover my data and it works.
the programme i am using is called GetDataBack and i am using the NTFS version.
this is so easy to use and requires no cd image writing or anything.
and it seems to be a self run programme so that you do not need to install it.

i highly recomend it...and i have found a good few gigs of my files back.
i got it through a torrent search.

I would have recommended GetBackData, having used it in the past, but when you said you wanted a free solution, I didn't think you meant pirating a commercial product (which is what you've done). Using pirate software to recover pirate anime -- figures, I suppose...

Having a 'live CD' knocking around is always useful for fixing PC problems when you can't boot from the hard drive.

Some of my back up files didnt work. I had loads of cds.

Some of my good files survived. Some didnt.

I back up using an external hard drive. They are better than cds.

And I back up all my Yaoi XD

I brought a 500GB harddrive to back up all of my stuff but the trouble is that its also got loads of new stuff on as well and its getting full so I'm back to square one again
