Darker Than Black Season 2 Blu-ray In Question, Manga Tweets

The bad news here

The Blu-ray is now in doubt I'm afraid. The DVD will still be out on 26-Dec. We will see how the DVD sells and then make a decision.

Yup. If you pre-ordered DTB S2 on Blu-ray, expect to see the order cancelled in due course.

I'm far too cynical about these things now to in any way comment positively...

I'm sure Conan will be along some time to accurately convey my feelings.

On the bright side, if there is one...

I did get the DVD check discs through. It's a 3 disc collection (so I won't be surprised to see the RRP shoot up from £24.99 to £29.99) with 6 episodes each on discs 1 and 2, and the 4 OVA episodes on disc 3.

That's a shame, especially as they are trying the doomed "buy it on DVD if you want a blu-ray" tactic, which only tends to annoy buyers. I presume the original DtB did ok here if the sequel was being pursued in the first place, so it really looks as though Manga UK have slammed on the brakes with blu-ray in general. Glad that I am being stubborn about Manga's support for region locking so I still have my US copy sorted.

Thank you so much for relaying the information about the OAVs so that AF17 doesn't explode :)

/o\

Guess I made the right decision to go with Funi's LE.

EDIT: I'm starting to wonder whether the K-On BD will ever see the light of day. Might just get the DVDs instead.

For God's sake, someone inform him immediately!

When I can import so easily I find it hard to care any more, but I was hoping Manga would release this so that I could have it in a BD sized case.

Stupid consumers and their habits of buying in physical stores where the distributors want their BDs displayed in the DVD section. YOU'RE RUINING MY SHELVING SYSTEM! DOESN'T THAT MATTER TO ANY OF YOU!?

I didn't even realise that Manga were planning to release it on Blu-ray. Oh well, I must say I'm not surprised that they aren't actually going to go through with t.

Thankfully there's the US set.

dont really understand the logic behind this.
if I buy the show on DVD I wont get it on BD later on if it will be released later that way. I wont pay twice.
so the BD wont sell, I'm quite sure

My thoughts exactly. This line about "releasing a BD if the DVD sells well enough" keeps being tossed out by companies who release niche titles (not just anime). And it belies a very complacent and backwards attitude they have developed towards their potential customers ("hey, buy this product you don't want and we'll see if it's worth our while to release the one you do"). Even worse, in some places I see potential customers actually advocating and encouraging buying the DVD simply to increase the chances of a BD release. The phrase "more money than sense" has never seemed so appropriate.

Glad I don't do Blu-rays. Too bad for those that were willing to give Manga a chance though, would be nice to be given a good reason why though.

This is where I was on it, too, and why I ordered the US one anyway.

As for Manga, not a lot you can do about the lack of market for a product here, but what does "We will see how the DVD sells and then make a decision" even mean. If it sells badly, will they assume that people were waiting for the BD release? >_>

I think the logic is that they always sell more DVDs than BDs, but they don't actually know how many DVDs they are going to shift.

Say with a regular simultaneous release they sell half as many BDs as DVDs on average. If they only sell a couple thousand copies of DtB2 on DVD they know that, regardless of whether people are holding out for the BDs, they aren't going to sell the requisite 3000 copies.

In that case they should not have said they were going to release it on blu-ray. People who were going to get the blu-ray are not likely to go 'okay then I just get the dvd version'. Funimation listed a Strike Witches blu-ray but have since removed it from the schedule - I have yet to buy Strike Witches.

Since Funi themselves have expressed interest in aquiring the rights to distribute Strike Witches on BD, I'd suggest that its delay is something to do with the recent release of a BD box set in Japan. That and Funi being Funi.

I see you are well informed sir ;)

Presumably they don't have to sell all 3000 copies to turn a profit, though.

But regardless of the exact numbers, between delaying the BD vs the US release and actually saying you "might" release it later, I think they would be distorted enough to not make it worth even looking into.
