Danganronpa 3 to be adapted as an anime

The forthcoming third release in the Danganronpa video game series is to be adapted as an anime in 2016.

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy, will conclude the "Hope's Peak Academy" storyline. In the series students at Hope’s Peak Academy are trapped by their headmaster, a black-and-white robotic bear named Monokuma. The only way to graduate is to murder one of the other students and get away with it, while the other students hold a trial to determine who committed the crime. If they are right the murder is executed, if they are wrong, then everyone except the murderer is killed.

A trailer has been released revealing some promotional art. While there are no recurring characters apart from Monokuma in the forthcoming game (Danganronpa 3: Everyone's New Semester of Killing) and it is not actually set at Hope’s Peak, the art in the anime's trailer seems to show that characters from the first game and its anime adaptation will appear including Makoto Naegi, Kyoko Kirigiri, Aoi Asahina and Yasuhiro Hagakure.

The anime is being produced by the studio Lerche. Concerning crew, Seiji Kishi will return as director; Kazutaka Kodaka will supervise the scenario; Masafumi Takada is the music composer; Rui Komatsuzaki will be in charge of original character designs; while Kazuaki Morita and Ryoko Amisaki are designing the anime characters.

The first anime series is currently available as a Blu-Ray and DVD from Manga Entertainment (see AUKN review). It was originally streamed by Funimation and was region blocked in the UK.

The original video games, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, and Danganronpa: Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls are all available to play on the PlayStation Vita (see AUKN reviews of game 1 and game 2).

Nooo, I wanted to see my favourite (and most hated) Danganronpa 2 characters animated.

I'll still watch the heck out of this though.

The developers of Danganronpa 3 have said for the third game it's a new story with new characters so they could probably skip 2. However, with a name like that, I'm not sure they're not connected...

I can understand that the third game is pretty much irrelevant but the anime version looks pretty relevant to me.

Either way they have just alienated the anime audience and have forced fans to play the games in order to understand what's going to happen with the Danganronpa 3 anime (the games are amazing but it's a dick move for fans who don't have a Vita and prefer animes to tell the tale).

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

They shouldn't have skipped 2. Or if they had too they shouldn't have called the anime DR3 as people will inevitably ask, where is 2.

I'm assuming that they will continue straight from the way the anime ended (especially given the characters shown in the trailer) so it's very likely the entire plot of 2 is being swept aside, possibly giving us a completely different route for the new anime. It's confusing and people will moan but on the other hand I'm glad it means a new mystery to solve instead of a retread of something where we already know the twists.

Would you rather it slots into the existing timeline somehow or goes in a unique direction with its own continuity? I'm not against the latter; it might even mean seeing some of the skipped characters in unusual settings, potentially...

After some careful thought I guess they can skip the second game just as long as the anime covers how the characters survived after they escaped Hope's Peak and reference the events of what they were doing in SDR2. Either way more Asahina and Kyoko hehehe.

From what I gather, the Danganronpa 3 anime and the recently announced Danganronpa V3 game are two entirely different stories rather than one being an adaptation of the other; with the latter having nothing to do with Hope's Peak Academy. Even considering that though, using "3" in the title when they aren't adapting the events of Danganronpa 2 is very unusual.

Then again, being a late-night anime likely means the goal of this series is to boost sales of V3, so they might use that to try and force out some additional sales of 2 as well.

I hope they do adapt the second game or make it so you don't need to have played it.

I considered buying a PS Vita a while back, then I realised that once you factor in accessories (which are almost pre-requisites due to the console design), it''s the same price as a PS4...

I might get a PS TV at some point for the Vita exclusives I wanted, but Trigger Happy Havoc is not PS TV compatible unfortunately. :(

The U.S. version of Trigger Happy Havoc however, apparently is.

I had seen some people suggesting it was compatible, so that might be an option, but I also heard the compatibility might vary based on where you brought the console even though Vitas are region free. The whole PS TV compatibility thing is an absolute mess. :?

This is a bit redundant though, since when I realised they were the same price once you'd brought a reasonable memory card and carrying case, I decided to save up for a PS4 instead...

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong (I did play Danganronpa 2 some time ago after all) but...

(Vague Danganronpa 2 Spoilers)
I'm fairly certain only the last couple of hours or so of Danganronpa 2 actually matter in the grand scheme of the plot started in 1. Don't get me wrong, I love the characters and story in Danganronpa 2 but, so long as they do cover what happened at the end briefly, it shouldn't be a problem. Calling it Danganronpa 3 did throw me for a loop, I didn't realise it wasn't an adaptation of the upcoming game until Josh mentioned it. Weird move. They probably just could have dropped the number and just kept the subtitle to make it less confusing.
