Damn box set fillers!

You know those printed cardboard boxes that they put in the starter set boxes to fill the space of dvd’s 2 to whatever? Well they do my head in. I’ve got a pile of them in a cupboard doing nothing but taking up precious space as I just can’t bring myself to throw them out. And the only reason I can’t throw them out is because I feel that if I ever sell them that they are incomplete without them. Why can’t they just shove a bit of foam or something in there?

Does anyone else keep them and would any of you care if they were not there if you bought a completed box set second hand?

I bin them, never saw the point of keeping them unless they have artwork on them, if theres are work I flatten them out and they are in a draw in my spare room

The simple answer of why they are there is to ensure the box maintains its shape. On top of that cardboard is cheaper to manufacture, easier to dispose of (collapsible) and (although this is probably not a consideration to the manufacturers) is biodegradable.

Flattening them; what a wonderfully simple idea. But there must be some reason I’ve not done that.

I reckon a foam block would be at least as easy and cheap as a fully printed, cut, folded and glued cardboard insert. And then I’d have no qualms about getting rid of them.

But I suppose that I’ll just have to be brave and chuck most of them out. Maybe just keep one or two of the best looking ones. Besides, if I think about it rationally, if I bought a completed box set there wouldn’t be one anyway. So there isn’t a sensible reason for keeping them really.

It’s funny how I used to love box sets when I first started buying anime. I remember how Sy used to say they’re a waste of space and our differing views even led to us swapping a Chrno Crusade thin-pak for an incomplete full size box set. Now I’ve got quite a lot of art boxes I can see where he was coming from.

I still think they’re nicer, but just a bit impractical. I was actually quite glad when my Vandread collection arrived this morning in a M-lock case.

I bought my first ever art box starter recently, Mushishi, and assumed that the included pretty box inside was to store the DVDs so that the end of only volume 1 showed. Is this not the case then? As it was beautifully covered assumed one was meant to keep it, lol!

Nope, they're there primarily to stop the single volume supplied from rattling around the box. I really wish they were plain so I could sling them without regret. And as they now tend to supply the art box with volume two or even three they are not even used for a brief period, as you already have one or two DVD's waiting to go in them.

To be honest, I don't think it's anything to do with keeping the boxes shape. That'd be ridiculous, the cardboard is thin and flimsy, not way could it hold up a reasonable amount of weight. hard foam would offer more protection, but even still - any kind of pressure on the box on any part of it is going to leave a mark/impression, and if a weight pressing down so greatly as to need foam/card to protect it from squashing - it wouldn't be salable anyway.

I think the point of it is in retail so the boxes don't look empty on the shelf/give a false impression that something is in there that is substantial.

I keep all mine in my cupboard =) I can't find myself to throw them away either, when I started collection I kept all the little stickers and bits and bobs that are stuck to the box as well, but it just got a bit tedious really, so they're gone - except a few significant ones.

I pretty much do what Melonpan does. I keep most of what comes with the boxes, I flatten out most of the filler bits but keep some as they are to keep the special bits and pieces in that you get with some releases.

I can't comment too much about this since the only Art Box i've ever got was the Lunar Legend Tsukihime one and all that had was a plain cardboard box inside to stop the first vol rattling. I was going to throw it out but i instead used it to disguise a xmas present.

I had the same dilemma when my vol #2 of Mushishi arrived yesterday...I mean, it looks really pretty but there's no room inside the slipcase for it any more. It'll probably end up the same way as my Speed Grapher filler - propping up other DVD cases on a partially-empty shelf! It's more attractive than a bookend.

The Speed Grapher artbox is awesome. Funimation's artboxes in general are awesome. What's also awesome is that xxxHolic and Black Blood Brothers are getting the same style box (with the pull off top), which is fantastic. Brilliant box designs. I just need to track down the volume 4 limited edition now! (along with Trinity Blood volume 2 LE, Basilisk 2-6, etc).

I really hope that some day Funimation will bring out a box like the Trinity Blood one, that wasn't an artbox, that was artbox made of pure beast!

The ones that really piddle me off, are the special editions of vol 2-4 of Haruhi Suzumia. Their boxes are bigger than the inserts already mentioned and all they hold is a DVD and a CD. Ok, so they also hold a couple of extras, but all of those extras fit inside the DVD case, so it's just a waste. :?

Oh yeah, they are pretty stupid. Seeing as the first box is designed to house all the subsequent DVD’s, CD’s and other paraphernalia, there really wasn’t much point in producing three oversized boxes that are ultimately redundant.

Last night I used McIcy’s simple plan of folding most of them. Still felt bad doing it though.

The Trinity Blood art box has just got to be the best. I was so disapointed when I could not get hold of one when it first come out (probably one of the only things I had not pre-ordered in ages) and thought I was going to have to make do with the standard edition. But I was lucky enough to find one on the net by chance.

It was also good when Ah My Goddess moved from Anime Works after season one to ADV for season two that they kept the box style the same.
