UK Anime Distributor Crunchyroll/Funimation/Manga UK Discussion Thread

I mean Bungo S1 still hasn’t been released almost like it’s only the popular shows they release like if Kamuy keeps getting delayed and is a shonen what hope does stuff like Free ever have.

Look, I get that delays are part and parcel of licensing but this has long since gone past the point of absurdity. Throughout the entirety of this year virtually every Anime UK News, ANN, etc. headline about Manga is to announce a delay. Every 3-4 weeks. Like clockwork. There's not a single title I've purchased that hasn't been postponed 2-3 times.

It's that I'm even particularly bothered having to wait on titles, but seeing the exact same thing happen over and over again is frankly embarrassing to watch, and points at a real unwillingness to either learn or adapt on Manga's part.

They need to seriously get their logistics in place or at the very least stop announcing titles before they actually know they'll be ready to launch, instead of creating this bizarre traffic jam system that only serves to slow down the rest of the titles in their backlog

Not only that, but they officially shut down non shounen fans.
The Manga December lineup Is just depressing boring with nothing but Shounen and Isekais.

Manga has lost a lot of respect because of this.

For me when you skip a well regarded show by an acclaimed director for Demon Lord Retry they ain’t getting my respect back ever.
But yes the CR announcement has refreshed this as CR have Given obv and UK chances have died

They deserve some slack for the circumstances of this year, but I agree announcing delays every month all year isn't sustainable.

I've been waiting many years for a UK home video release of Hunter x Hunter, so I'm willing to give them a lot of leeway, but it's no denying they can do much better for the fans right now.

Everyone’s delaying. Blu-rays manufactured in Europe + Brexit + Covid + deadlock in UK ports + UK mail system redlining = delays. Funimation are the only ones keeping a running commentary though.
It's not so much that they are delaying things, its that the things they are delaying each month are consistently the same titles as the previous month.

The delays are definitely unfortunate and I agree that the constant influx of them isn't great. Because of how topsy turvy this year has been maybe it would have been better if they'd said "We have to delay this title, and will announce a new release date closer to the time".

That said it's the age-old debate of announce things to let people know what's coming vs hold them back till they are ready. One you'll get people complaining about delays, the other results in a stream of people asking "Do you have x? Do you have y? Do you have z?"

Question guys. When Funimation/Sony purchased Mangauk why not a company like mvm or anime limited or even starting there own?
AL and MVM are proudly independent and probably would probably prefer partnerships over ownerships. A reason for Manga in particular is probably the fact they’re long standing, have brand recognition and an already long established relationship with FUNi. Sony also tried to release to anime under the Sony Home Pictures brand a few years ago, they originally released Black Clover S1P1, My Hero Academia S1+S2 and Attack on Titan S2 but these were fairly pricy sets in comparison to others, I remember Black Clover S1P1 retailing for close to £30-£35 most of the time, whereas an individual part released by Manga is about £20-£25 at most. So my guess for them swiftly giving up is either people weren’t buying because it was too expensive for what you were getting or people just didn’t know Sony had released this stuff.
EDIT: Their MHA S1 release was only a collectors edition too, went out of print fairly quickly and became extremely hard to get a hold of

My Hero Academia Season 1 was actually one of the few series released by Universal

Yeah CE only then Sony for S2 binned the CEs. Then manga made them return for MHA S3 because god knows. As AoT S2 got a CE when we never got the funi CE for S1 so those won’t match either.

Starting your own company succesful requires knowledge regarding the market - that's most likely how Universal failed.

Manga UK is a famous brand and also has access to some of the best selling non-Sony properties in anime history: Pokémon, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Ghost in the Shell
This gives Sony both: Experience with high volume sellers and niche titles. And good connections to most retail chains...

Apparently they own their own dub anymore which is why it wasnt on the release. These license and ownership rights sure sound complicated

Yeah after a certain period the rights revert back to the original Japanese license holder. A similar example would be the dubs featured on the animelog channel as the Japanese companies involved have provided the dubs themselves
