Cover Art Discussion

Original Cowboy Bebop cover art topic.

Following on from that, some more general UK/US anime cover art chit-chat...

My original post:

I bought the R1 singles for this show as they came out but this time travelling thread necromancy was more interesting than usual.

And rather belatedly, I quite like the UK covers! They were like the Japanese VHS tapes. The R1s are nice too, in a different way.

I always liked these covers but in many ways preferred the simplicity of the US covers. They really reminded me of those Jazz compilation CD covers, including the back of the cover with all the text. Memories!

I feel like I want to watch some Bebop now. Might do later on today. ;)

I liked a couple of the UK covers but all in all they seemed like a bit of a Faye fanservice fest, which isn't very indicative of the show.

By contrast I think the US ones managed to capture the feel of Bebop very well, they had a sort of understated coolness to them.

Our Ghibli releases look much more classy than the US ones as well. Theirs just look cheap.

I motion that this thread be changed to "Cover Art Thread" and moved to General Anime. Boring as it might seem I quite like discussing it.

Edit: Thank you Rui ;)

Well now I know how to split topics, I guess. Grumble grumble :) sorry about the strange phantom "moved" in News. Next time...

The Paprika cover art has always attracted me. I have the French blu-ray and quite like the cover, but the UK DVD has an interesting one too.

UK DVD:

UK Blu-Ray complete with really annoying box on her chin:

The gorgeous box set edition which I now wish I had:

The UK DVD case and the one with Paprika's face over it seem to be going for a completely different set of people.

The UK DVD case for Paprika doesn't actually look like the pic in the Amazon link. It's the same as the Blu-ray but the annoying text doesn't cover her chin at least.

I kinda wish I'd bought the French Special Edition now. Similar to the Japanese but much cheaper. Why the hell didn't we get a special one?

How weird...

I much prefer the LE's Paprika expression. Mischievous and knowing.

I like the UK cover of the first Ghost in the Shell movie. It's much more attractive than the iconic image of movie version Kusanagi, which adorns the slipcover. Masamune Shirow art = instant win.

While that is nice, I prefer the regular cover art.

hmmm

it reminds me of that example with one of the air gear volumes that Del Ray altered and that tanoshimi kept to the original.

i admit i do get kinda enoyed when American licensors piss about with the covers, cause then it just looks tom tit

I don't like Shirow's style much (don't kill me) and have fond memories of the original poster art for GitS in the back of my old comic shop haunt, so personally the iconic one works better for me. Slipcovers are a happy medium, though :)

We had a laugh about the Mnemosyne UK cover in its thread recently but I'm still bewitched by the original art shown in the link. It looks so much more interesting than the revealed cover art.

Agreed, I like them both, but agree with Wildcard that the Shirow cover art would be misleading without the movie poster slipcase. You can imagine someone who'd never seen it would be confused when the film looked nothing like the cover.

HMV's Origin LE has one of the best designs I've seen, A horizontal slipcase (vertical slipcovers are pointless IMO) and then a reversible sleeve inside without ratings stickers on the reverse! Hooray! So I was a bit dissapointed that The GWLTT LE didn't follow the same pattern (no reversible). I hate those bloody rating stickers so much. It wasn't so bad when there was only one but now that we have the Irish ones as well... :x

Out of all the Japanese Lupin DVD covers this one has to be my favourite.

Continuing with the topic of UK DVD covers looking better than the US counterparts our Secret of Mamo DVD cover is a whole lot better than the US version as well.

US version. Tacky looking mess.

UK version. Retro, colourful, lively. Reflects the movie and characters more than that brown sludge on the US cover.

In my opinion, one of the best recent DVD cover arts for a set I have purchased would be that of the new Rune Soldier BoxSet. Each DVD case and disc inside has really nice new art as well.

While cover art is nice and all, it's the spine art I wish they would think more about. I mean it's what we look at more. Pity most are just either extentions of teh cover art or just the title, vol number, and maybe a small picture.

Some spines are pretty badly done. MVM's first three Black Lagoon volumes have different sized text that doesn't line up at all and BBFC stickers that get bigger each time and are off centre. It just looks really amateur-ish and doesn't make them look worth what they cost. [/pedantry]

Anyway, I found a US cover I like better than the UK one, Tokyo Godfathers.

Totally agree about the Tokyo Godfathers artwork. I'd love to own a giant poster of the UK version but all that you can get in poster form is the awful US DVD cover.

Anyway this should be obvious. The UK edition of Innocence VS the US version.
