Comic Research

Don’t know if I'm going to get much of a response for this thread but I'm to lazy to do the research myself ^_^
What I'm looking for are comic/manga artists that come from different countries that art is somehow unique. I don’t care if it’s even in English as long as it’s available to buy of Amazon or e-bay.
Thanks to anyone who replies

Belgian artist, unique style, and a dickload of thought was put into the TT world-
I think there was a bunch of political shenanigans at the time they were wrote as well, but I've never looked into it myself.

And if you can find this obscurity the you'll have a lot of interesting artists to consider.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Comics-Undergro ... 545&sr=1-2

Obvious artists: Taiyo Matsumoto
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/sea ... 0Matsumoto

Robert Crumb
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_b/0 ... bert+Crumb

Junko Mizuno
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/sea ... o%20Mizuno

Every artist's got their own unique style so it's hard to know what to recommend really...

hey, I like tintin...

This is Lenore from Roman Dirge (I believe this is what a comic written by Tim Burton would look like)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenore-Noogies- ... 387&sr=1-1

You could try Mafalda (argentinian artist - loads of political complaint, but easy to understand, as its usually generic stuff - I could not find any in english...)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toda-Mafalda-Qu ... 611&sr=1-1

persepolis (you can get it in french / english)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Persep ... 628&sr=1-1

Joe sacco - very political, sometimes considered comics journalism
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/sea ... oe%20Sacco

I love the spirit from will eisner as well.. the guy is considered the father of sequential art. It's worth a try. And I believe the usual stuff is interesting as well... neil gaiman, alan moore, frank miller...

Ive never read the comic so Im not judgeing that, its just that the show on channel 5 has ruined it for me and i dont think i can read it without bad childhood memories comming back to me.

Are you talking about tin tin? if so, the show is pretty faithful to the original stuff...

Lupin III by Monkey Punch. Japanese artist. Looks more western compared to a lot of Japanese comics.

I'll go with Barefoot Gen as well by Keiji Nakazawa. Based on his real life experiences of the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima.

I second Persepolis and Tin Tin too.

if you're up to regular manga as well, you should try tezuka... anything is a worth, but Buddha has got to be one of my favourites.

either slam dunk or vagabond - for what I call the art of telling a few seconds in several frames....

Gunsmith cats is one of my personal favourites, but it's been accused of fan service and violence - nothing even close do kite or mezzo animes, but anyway.

And once again, what is your research about? there are several manga / comics encyclopedias and such around....

I had a quick look through the replies and I don't think anyone has mentioned Jean Girauld (aka Moebius, aka Gir) yet; he is best known for the work he did for Metal Hurlant / Heavy Metal magazine and for the Incal saga, but that is only a fraction of his output. I've not checked out the Heavy Metal stuff as I know enough about the magazine to know it's not my kind of thing, but to my mind the Incal series is one of the most accomplished comics/BD projects to come out of Europe. Moebius's art-work is instantly recognizable and has helped shape the visual vocabulary of western Sci-Fi for several decades now - think Tron, Alien, Blade Runner, The Fifth Element, etc.

I couldn't find a decent sample of the Incal books online and the promo for the (unrealised, as far as I know) feature-length animated version on YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBktKOQGBYA ) is a bit fuzzy, so it may be best to have a look at the Starwatcher clip instead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VymfF0ePqCE

The Incal is available through Amazon, by the way - see http://www.amazon.com/Incal-Epic-Conspi ... 1401206298 for volume one.

I've mentioned him first =P but the only thing I could remember about him is that his daughter is called Nausicaa after Myazaki's movie Nausicaa... Myazaki and him are friends.

Heavy metal mag never made it in south america, I do remember hearing rumours about it though.

I've just remembered about Milo Manara, if you're into erotic comics....

Oh, you did mention Moebius indeed - sorry I missed it the first time around!

I heard that the 1970s issues featured quite a bit of high-concept Sci-Fi interspersed with adult themes and fantasy, and that the magazine became more and more explicit (in terms of both the sex and the violence it contained) somewhere in the 1980s; I have not seen any issues myself, though, so I cannot say for sure how accurate this description is.

Not my thing, as I said - but others on the forum might find it interesting.
