Changes In Games

Much like anime and manga, when a game finally hits the UK or (US) some parts are edited and changed - sometimes for no reason. What is your opinion on this subject?

Here are some examples:

Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) - One of the more recent editions to censorship. In Europe it was decided that decaptating your enemy was too brutal for our eyes to bear and thus it was taken out. I'm sure that with a game rated 16+, most of the people playing it have seen far worse on the teevee!
I hear it's back in Ninja Gaiden Black though due to the BBFC rating it.

Streets of Rage 3 (Megadrive) - In the UK version (in comparison to Bare Knuckle 3) not only was the story changed from a nuclear
holocaust to mere bombings around a city, but also a boss enemy named Ash was completely removed. The reason? Well he looked like as if he was in the Village People and pranced about the screen - implying he was a stereotyped gay person.
Enemy names was changed from such obvious names like Vice to something more thuggish like Garcia. Colour palletes was swapped, Blaze loses her famous red ala tart outfit and gets replaced with a dire grey one. Bare legs are not allowed and was coloured in. Save our children!

I don't agree with anything being taken out or changed (unless it was a translation thing) as I feel it's going to be toned down from the original meaning.
Is there any examples that made you enraged/happier on how the companies changed a potential gaming experience?

I'm annoyed that the PAL versions of Onimusha 1&2 had the Japanese audio removed, it would've been alot better in it's original language. Onimusha 3 was only in English in US & UK, hopefully Dawn of Dreams will have the Japanese audio in the UK (already confirmed to be in the US release).

Eidt: No Japanese audio in Dawn of Dreams Pal version :( .

One of the things i was kind of Annoyed at was that Kingdom Hearts for the UK did not include the Weapons you get from Sephiroth and the Ice Titan where taken out and only included in a later volume of Kingdom hearts (Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix). they also included another Boss called Unknown..and i found this really annoying as they did not release this here. so we where not able to get these extras.

I was really annoyed that they took the decapitations out of Gaiden, although I was chuffed that it was fixed in the Black version. Still annoying though.

I'm not german, but I know that the original Half-Life had you fighting Robots with corresponding robo-groans and oil-splats there. Way to kill the game.

Most games in Germany get censored for violent content. If you think HL is bad, you should see what happened to the Resident Evil series.

Don't Germany have a woman Prime Minister? That would sort of explain the cut in violence - a bit like Hillary Clinton plans to do.

Germany has been strict on violent content for a matter of decades, not years. Hence the example of Half-Life from 1998. Notable that Half-Life 2 managed to slip through with just the elimination of blood-splats, but that's due to a number of factors:

1. Rag Dolls aren't considered as violent and gibbing, where bodies explode into pieces. There isn't gibbing in any version of HL2.
2. The enemies in HL2 aren't visibly human, even though technically they are.
3. There is no friendly fire in HL2 like the original, so it's impossible to kill any friendly humans.

In a way, it's like the entire game was self-censored across all versions. Not that it bothered me in the slightest.

The reason that most games - if they are censored - here in the UK and Europe is because of Germany. The country itself has seems to have taken a sort of pacifist route since World War II. They generally don't like anything violent ('brainwashing') their children as the guilt and shame of WWII is still remicent. Decaptations especially are a big no to Germany..and since we are part of the EU, we have to abide. Sometimes I think the UK would be better off by itself - if it means the full glory of games! lol.

Breath Of Fire IV decaptation got cut out - and when I was playing the game, I wondered what actually happened. One minute the man was standing over some steps and the next he was lying on the floor! Thanks Germany. :P

I agree. I don't see why we should be ruled by a group of people who are mainly made up of none British. All it does is strip away any identity of the individual countries, you know they're even thinking of making a United States of Europe. Oh yeh another super power who think they have the right to govern the world!

i have always liked games to be played they way they where made..it means its just as it was meant to be and best in my opinion...if the games are censored or bits are cut out then it spoils it..the game is not the same as it was or should be

I don't believe in censorship in the design indusrty. Did anyone cover up the private parts on Michelangelo's David? No (although they did tried in simpsons) What I mean is that computer games are an art form, and shouldn't be censored. People should be able to decide for themselves wether it is suitable, and the government shouldn't decide for us.
