Appleseed XIII, a new 13-episode computer-animated series adaptation of Masamune Shirow's Appleseed future police manga, has been green-lit for next spring. The series will not be a sequel to the two previous computer-animated movies directed by Shinji Aramaki, but a new retelling. Like the original manga, the story follows the exploits of the ES.W.A.T. paramilitary unit member Deunan and her combat cyborg colleague Briareos at the city of Olympus after World War V.

Takayuki Hamana (The Beast Player Erin, Chocolate Underground, Library War, Moshidora, The Prince of Tennis) is directing the animators at Jinni's Animation Studios, in cooperation with Production I.G. Jun'ichi Fujisaku (The Beast Player Erin, Blood+, Moshidora, Real Drive) is supervising and co-writing the scripts, and Takayuki Goto (The Beast Player Erin, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG, Hunter X Hunter, Video Girl Ai) is designing the characters based on Shirow's original work. Atsushi Takeuchi (Ghost in the Shell, Yukikaze, The Sky Crawlers, Reideen) is returning from Aramaki's first Appleseed film to draw the mechanical designs.

The company Micott & Basara is producing the project as it did for the two Aramaki films. Micott & Basara had announced Appleseed: Genesis, a previous attempt to adapt Appleseed into a computer-animated series, in 2008. However, the project at the studio Radix mobanimation was suspended, and Radix, sued Micott & Basara. (Micott & Basara counter-sued Radix.)

It's good to see Appleseed get a full series after all these years, but not having seen either of the two films, I'm a bit concerned about it being full CG...

I guess it depends how exactly how they go about it. I really enjoyed the first new movie, but Ex Machina... not so much. I don't think the visuals are necessarily a barrier for a show like this.

I don't inherently hate CGI, but a TV budget is likely to be pretty stretched by the demands. Even the impressive visuals in Appleseed: Ex Machina and Vexille suffered from some awkward animation in places (to say nothing of the uncanny valley), so I do wonder how well this will fair by comparison.

At least there's plenty of material to work with given Appleseed's sizable manga backlog. For now I'll remain cautiously optimistic.

Could be worse....could be a 3D Appleseed.

Considering the length of the manga, I always felt that it could do with a series. For now I am cautiously optimistic.

This is FANTASHTIC news!

Let's all bear in mind that the previous CGI movies and Vexille are a few years old already - and while Japan may not be the go-to centre for CGI, techniques are sure to have advanced.

The world needs more Shirow. I'm a happy little fanboy today!

Even though they looked quite nice, the two Appleseeds and Vexille reminded me of early 90's CG (Johnny Quest, Reboot) with the stiff movements.

But if done right, the new series could be as fluid and Awesome as Clone Wars. That's all I can hope for.

The world needs more Shirow.
Yes. This. I hate to be a pessimist though, but I don't have a great deal of hope for this. I did not like the first movie at all so didn't even bother with the second. What I want to see is an Appleseed show from the team behind GITS: SAC. That would be epic!

Finally. This has been floating around for ages. I hope in the dub the first films voices are used. Jamieson Price rules. I was massively annyoed Ex Machina only had Japanese audio on blu ray, because for me Appleseed dub >/= sub >>>>>>>>>>>>> Ex machina dub. Plus why didn't the clone sound like Briarioes, what's up with that?
