Casino Royale

Finally got to see it last night and I am soooooooo glad I did. Daniel Craig is definately the bond for the 21st century. The opening scene is gritty shot in a black and white setting with flash backs to how he attains his Double 0 Status. Then we go to Africa and see him chasing a bomb maker through a building site and then an embassy.

Comedy is there and fits in perfectly especially when he is being tortured and resorts to quips about having an itch that needs scratching really made me smile (and cringe along with every other guy in the audience). And the Poker scene is well crafted for the same style of humour.

M is actually given a more fleshed out role in this movie too as we get to see where she lives and are even given a hint to her real personality and where the title of M originates.

Bad guys - plenty in this one from Machette weilding warlords to the usually slick haired facial scarred nemesis.

Seemed more like an action film than a Bond film, took me back to the days of Timothy Dalton but at least he got gadgets all Craig gets is a Aston Martin DBS (apart form a medi-kit this has no Q style upgrades), a mobile phone and a silence 9mm gun (I assume this is a Walther made weapon).

Problems:
1. Takes a while to get used to the idea of the Franchise starting from scratch, that there were no Bond films before this one. With so much History its hard to forget that and believe he only just got Double 0 status.

2. Way too soppy in parts, I have never seen bond do the deep caring scene with a Bond Girl definately a bit of 21st century pro-rights seeping in there, so not a bond moment.

Althought the film did seem a bit long its still a great Bond flick and one I will definately be adding to my collection. Oh and one of the Greatest Moments in the Film is the very last line, sent chills down my spine.

9.5/10

Yeah I loved this film so much, I think it was alot more contemporary than the other films, but for the better, which is important to get accross!

I think the theme tune really fitted the film and the oppening sequence was amazing

Favourite line: 'That last hand almost killed me' LOL, you'll know what I mean if you saw the film ;)

I agree. I watched this on Sunday and for me its the best Bond film I've seen since GoldenEye. Daniel Craig was superb.

Amazing film. Another exampe of what a good mainstream blockbuster shoud be. :)

I hope the next film is similar to Casino Royale, in the way that Casino Royale is good now, (if that makes sense) not just copying a working style.

Im sure I read somewhere that the director who worked on goldeneye worked on this film also, I don't know his name though. I would like to see other films he directed

Yeah, the director of Casino Royale was the same guy who directed GoldenEye (can you believe the latter is ten years old this year?! I was still at school when that was released!). His name is Martin Campbell (did you know he directed No Escape?! I couldn't believe that when I found out!).

And you'll be pleased to know that the next Bond film continues to use the same story arc set-up by this effort (in Film 2006 with Jonathan Ross in the James Bond special it was made clear that the film continues - give or take - where this one left off). Sounds promising, though for some reason the director will be different as far as I'm aware (apparently its been penciled in as a 2008 release - though it is very early days).

2008 thats made me happy I love the Bond franchise and am really looking forward to this reincarnation of Bond being expanded. All I can really say is Bring on the new Q although I will miss seeing John Cleese

I think the James bond film, casino royale is okay. Nothing much that make me dribble over it.

But, I'm not really a big fan of james bond. My dad thinks Daniel craig is **** and doesn't suit james bond, as he haven't got the looks or the attitude.

well, A lot of long time james bond fan will probably say that, and oldies too. Daniel craig must be bring in new people to the james bond franchise.

Oh well, I bet thunderball and from russia with love are next for a remake

Couldn't agree more with those points. The openening titles and scenes were very well done - even I was impressed!

I have never been a huge Bond film, so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed Casino Royale. I think Daniel Craig is a very good Bond and he somehow made him seem a little more believable.

A definite 9 out of 10 and maybe even a DVD purchase! :)

I agree! The best opening credit sequence for a Bond film to date as far as I'm concerned (further improved by the fact it resembled to quite an extent the visual style used in the Killer7 video game)!

And I'm not a huge Bond fan, but like any other film, if its good enough then it'll get the acclaim it deserves. :)

Sticking with James Bond, I bought my two favourite films in the franchise (which aren't Casino Royale) - License To Kill with the horribly underrated Timothy Dalton and GoldenEye with the excellent Pearce Brosnan.

This leads me to my next question - what are people's favourite Bond films? And while were at it, peeps favourite actor who played 007?

Let debate commense! ;-)
