best magazine for anime

Dandy Guy, in Space
hey there im thinking about buying magazines from up1 and was wondering whats the best anime/manga related magazine on the site ive heard of PiQ and its not so many pages of anime and the rest being video games and otaku so would someone help me with this please

Neo is a good magazine and it is very UK-centric (but this can sometimes be a problem). It is also aimed a younger audience.

Otaku USA magazine is my current favourite, it has some really well written articles, the most comprehensive manga section of any magazine and comes with a free DVD. It is also really good at covering older stuff and things that are a bit obscure that you may have missed out on in the past.

Piq is the new Newtype USA), it also now covers a much broader range of subjects (TV, video games, film etc) and Its probably moving to been more of a general geekery magazine but still has some good coverage of anime and manga although I've never felt they go into enough depth. It's still an okay read and is a bit cheaper than the rest too.

I am a magazine whore and read all three :p

I once bought a copy of Anime Insider, and they seem to be well balanced. The only problem is that the pages are really thin and feel cheaply made. It's also an American magazine, so be prepared to shell out some serious moolah.

Neo has too much stuff that I don't care about (Asian movies, music, etc) or they give decent scores to anime I hate (e.g. Ah! My Goddess and Girls Bravo).

Piq (Newtype USA) seems to be way too expensive to even bother with.

is otuka usa a r1 version to neo

and sorry I forgot to mension it but im interested in american published magazines and I collect neo btw

Yeah, Anime Insider pisses all over Neo...which I think is just really inconsistent and contradictory.

AI is about £4.25 at Borders...not too bad.

You might want to consider two upcoming anthology magazines "Faust" from Del Rey, and "Yen Plus" from Yen Press (Square Enix titles). Coming out in August and July respectively.

They'll be similar to Shounen Jump I guess, but without the censoring and the generalised opinion that manga is solely the hobby of little kids.

I was going to say I hope Up1 do a subscription service for these two anthologies, but they're not monthly as far as I know, at least Faust is irregular, so that's probably out of the question.

FAUST - Includes works by Takeshi Obata. Hmm. Sold out, instantly.
I want it, Because of him. I dunno what they are publishing by him, though. VIZ have most of it since they are all like.. Shogakukan titles. ;/

Interesting we are talking about this. I recently created an anime magazine concept as part of my journalism degree, to tackle the failings I've seen in current anime magazines. Here's what I'd suggest:

The best one's I've seen are AnimeLand (a french one which a friend kindly buys for me) which is actually way better than the UK ones and has more diverse subjects, it talks about a lot of anime and manga series we don't get over here at all.

And AnimeMania from Germany which is just as good as the french one. I don't know why but the international mags just seem to do things much better. But as for english one's I'd go for Anime Insider, they profile a lot of specialist stuff which don't get a mention in the UK press.
