At what age did you get into Anime/Manga?

Brought up on and obsessed with the ol' European-Japanese hybrid (such as Dogtanian) that seemed to be everywhere in the early-mid eighties. After that, I aodred the Turtles (okay, not true anime, but, well, you know). And then when I was about 12 or so, I was re-introduced, though this time to "proper" anime thanks to late night on Channel 4 and BBC2 (IIRC. Back in the days of the 90s anime boom, before the current one). So I've been into it for about 12 years steadily, though I was 16 before it became a true obsession (which Pokemon had a big effect upon :D ).

What shows did they have on?

I remember 3x3 Eyes being one of them (though I think that was closer to when I was 14 as I remember watching it at a sleepover). Basically a bunch of the anime Manga Ent. released on VHS back in the early and mid 90s, and quite a few were quite disposable :D

If you ignore the various hybrid series that were around in the 80s and early 90s, most of which I loved as a kid, then I didn't get into anime until I was 19, almost 20, and at University where I was introduced to Gundam Wing (I saw DBZ first, but GW and Outlaw Star were the series that really got me into anime). Around the same time, I saw Wings of Honneamise thanks to my parents who are massive fans of foreign film, but had never taken an interest in anime films until that point. It was the combination of the two that got me really interested and Honneamise remains one of my favourite films.

Late 70s - early 80's: We were the first family I knew to get a video player and at that time there wasn't that many videos to rent. Our rental shop was in the form of a Bedford Rascal loaded up with assorded Japanese cartoons and live action films (Godzilla, etc.) that used to call round once a week.

Easy way to keep my brother and I quiet for a weekend was to sit us in front of the TV with a stack of videos to watch!

I can remember various images of lots of different movies, but nothing really specific - apart from Kimba the White Lion (Probably due to the catchy theme song!)

...oh, and Battle of the Planets on TV of course! ;)

maybe about 6 or 7... My first anime I think is "A Little Princess Sara" anime based from a novel by Burnett... then Akazukin Chacha... she's just so cute....then they showed Rayearth where I really got hooked up to anime... then during high school, I've been watching YuYu Hakusho, Samurai X, Card Captor, Saber Marionette, Slayers then came Evangelion... it's like wow but I ended up confuse and watch it again just last year.... They aired Lupin the III but I didn't catch it coz of poor reception and it's even popular that time....

Other anime I can remember are Heidi of the Alps, Daddy Long Legs, Adventures of Tom Sawyer and another Adventures of Hulckleberry Finn - these were quite old coz I seen them on late 1990s....

i got into it when i was about 10.

i remember the first series i watched was new dominion tank police.

didn't have a clue what was going on (because it was ep 9) but i loved it.

after that, the love kept growing.
i think the next series i watched was... dragonball z (on cartoon network). once i found that, i 100% loved anime.

simple really

I was about 18/19, a friend showed me cowboy bebop. Although again i watched quite a few hybrids in the 80's. Anyone watch Samurai pizza cats???

Ahh, another of these threads. :D

Hehe, Our first video was a Ferguson Videostar with huge piano key buttons, :p and our version of the Bedford van was a guy with a holdall who came round every sunday. :D

Watching the whole series of Robotech condensed to fit onto a 90 minute tape was a bizare experience. :p

He also had a film called Techno Police, that I remember fondly to this day. :) Can't get the image of a helecopter based above a set of traffic lights out of my head whenever I think of this one. Ahh, happy day. :D

And yes Battle of the Planets on TV was good :)

I hardly remember the age when I got into Anime. My first Anime was probably Doreman at a very young age (I can't remember much things when I'm very young), but I'll say I was about 7 or 8 years old at the time. However I never really gotten really much into Anime at that time, sure Doreman is an Anime, but I didn't know much about it being an Anime and being created in Japan. However when Pokemon aired in UK TV back when I was 14 it made me got into Anime alittle more and then when Cardcaptors aired when I was 16, that was the age when I gotten SO much deeply into Anime and made me wanna check out more Anime's. So I'll say I have officially become a massive Anime fan at 16, even though I have sorta known Anime at 7-8.
