Asian Cinema

I was hoping I could get some feedback from everyone about what they feel about Asian cinema as i'm doing a project about it at school.

I just want to generally know what you like about Asian cinema, whats your favourite films and why.

Also, what influence you feel Asian cinema has had
on Western viewers as well as Western cinema.

Anything else you want to add or talk about will also be a great help to me.

Also if you could just put down your age and gender as well, that would be great :D

I don't really notice the difference between Eastern and western. I hold Eastern in the same regard as Western.

Fair enough point, but I wasn't actually asking about a difference between the two.

You asked for what influence it had, and for me, none as I just watch it the same as I watch western films.

Sorry, I am not very good at wording things

Ah I do understand what you mean,I think it may be hard for me to agree with as personally I feel that eastern cinema has influenced western. And vise versa also.

Ive probably been a bit vague,it's the beginning of my project and theres lots of different starting points.

Asian Cinema is a particular favourite of mine, i always like the likes of House of Flying Daggers to Hero. I like the fantasy or mythical element they add to it, ok the jumping is possibly over-exaggerated at times but it still doesn't make some of the films any less enjoyable.

As for the impact on the western cinema/western world, i guess there is some. I think over the last few years or so, eastern cinema has become more recognised over here, and found to be enjoyable by many, taking again House of Flying daggers for example, it did get nominated for an oscar(i think) after its release so it does show it can compete with western cinema.

I hope that helps you out a bit :)

That is great,thank you a million times over.Exactly what i need :D

Kung fu films always my favorite's.
I like the funny dubbings :)
But really it's the complete disregard for reality in western films there must be a logical reason why this person can't be harmed by bullets or they go for realism, the eastern reasoning why they can jump so high?because they can end of.
plus the ring is originally an Asian horror adapted for the west they went the oposite of realism in a really scary way(really i couldn't watch tv for a week).

My point is western movies to me lack imagination or are based on true stories and tend to stay in the realm of reality.Where as eastern films tend to be based around folk law and legends and will do what they think is best.

When it comes to Asian cinema I LOVE it.
Im actually fairly new to the scene in terms of movies seen, starting off with battle royal.
And of course the Vengeance trilogy.
These are such (as far as Im concerned) perfectly crafted movies with some of the most memorable soundtracks Ive ever heard.

Oldboy stood out for me in particular.
It was like nothing Id ever seen.
And its influence is already apparent in the East as Im pretty sure I heard talk of a new America developed version.

As far as Asian films go S.Korea is definitly the place to be at the moment and not just because of Park-chan-wooks titles.
There are lots of other quality titles like Brotherhood and My sassy girl.

Its hard to put my finger on why I love asian film so much, it just feels different.

Another on I love is the japanese production Toni Takitani, not sure whos seen this but its a great piece of film.

Hope this helped in some way, if you wanna ask any particular details, go ahead.

I discovered Japanese cinema after seeing Kurosawa’s Yojimbo. It was like nothing I’d ever seen before and lead me to watch many of Kurosawa’s films and other period drama’s (jidaigeki) by other filmakers like Hiroshi Inagaki.

Many of Kurosawa’s films had a noteable influence on western cinema with numerous re-makes of his films (inc Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven, Rashomon/The Outrage) and use of his techniques (frame wipes inparticular). But I guess that it would be fair to say that that influence is probably not hugely significant as it probably pales against the influences taken from one western filmmaker to another. Plus Kurosawa was himself inspired by western cinema, even to the point of being criticised for it in Japan.

Possibly, in my eyes at least, the greatest influence that eastern cinema has had on western cinema has been in the horror genre. Hollywood has really embraced this extremely dark and often grotesque area of asian movies. Again this is clearly shown by the number of remakes (that are invariably poor imitaions) that Hollywood is making. It’s probably also the case that this particular genre has managed to make eastern cinema more familiar and accesible to western viewers in the last ten years or so.

But my favourite eastern films are definetly Samurai films as I love all the honour and loyalty, or treachery, that goes with these films. I think my favourite is Sanjuro. I could watch Sanjuro over and over again.

I’m male and thirty (or sanjuro!)

Hope my ramblings are of some use to you.

Again, thank you very much for taking the time :D

oh ramblings are good! I should of probably just put 'what are your opinions on asian cinema' as the main post so people could of just run with it instead of what i did ^^' Anyway, yeah, thank you very very much :) It's greatly appreciated.

A fuller answer (which I can PM or e-mail to you as and when it's done) will have to wait for a day of less mental tiredness so I'll just summarise it here.

Basically, Asian cinema (I'm talking far eastern here, rather than Bollywood, a genre I have no knowledge of whatsoever) appeals to me because it is stylistically and thematically different from Western cinema. The approach to storytelling's different, the inspiration's different (e.g. folklore and legends particular to the country of origin).

I'd recommend watching originals and Hollywood remakes - the likes of Ring and the American remake highlight differences in telling the same story, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. For the record, I think the Japanese Ring is better overall!

Hope that helps...there's more waffle where this came from!
