Arthur C Clarke: 1917-2008

Death Scythe
I'm not sure how many of you guys read a lot of sci-fi, but it was announced today that the legendary writer Arthur C Clarke has died at the age of 90. It's a bit of a shock TBH, although he's had a really long and productive life!

I guess most people know him through Kubrik's '2001' movie but the story that inspired it, not to mention many others of his, have been favourites of mine for years. I'd strongly recommend Rendezvous With Rama and the original Odyssey novels, plus the Of Time and Stars short stories collection.

My condolences to his family - it is a great loss. :(

I'm ashamed to say I've never read any of his stuff (nor I have even seen the '2001' movie), but I'll definitely make an effort to read them soon!

YES, YES, YES

sir Auther C Clarke's, three rules of pridiction, 3rd rule stating that "any fully working piece of technology, has the appearance of magic" not the exact words, but close enough.

Also he predicted that man wouldn't land on the moon until the mid 70's

but thats all about i know of him

I have read a few of his books. I believe he also worked out or predicted the geostationary orbit for satalites the Clarke Orbit. It's that orbit in space, 36,000 km above the equator, where a satellite takes exactly 24 hours to orbit the Earth. So the satellite orbits at the same rate as the planet itself spins, seeming to hover over the same place on the equator.

A technological prophet has passed, indeed a great shame. Have read a lot of his work, but avoided the films like the plague as the suffer badly from 'Adaptation Degradation' as they are too complex for an hour and a half. Rendevous with Rama and related works could work as an anime or manga series (especially given how much anime has been influenced by his work).

Wow, I really, really must check out his work! 2001: A Space Odyssey is the best place to start, yes?
Nah it's a little heavy going. Try his short stories, or the Rama series (taking into account the first one is very dry compared to the rest.
