Anyone remember Saturday night anime on Sci-fi?

I upgraded a lot of tapes to DVD, alot of my tapes were taped straight from
TV anyway, so needed upgrading really. Some stuff have never got put on DVD so is lost for good.

It was a pain getting rid of all the old tapes, nobody wants em. Sadly lots went into the skip ...

to be honest when anime central was on i would tape all episodes

I remember the only way to watch anime was through word of mouth and buying incredibly expensive VHS' from the back of Fordbidden Planet...

And whilst I find it as hard as ever to pick out stuff I want to watch, its kind of lost something now that its so easy to pick up :p

Now I fancy watching Angel Cop, but can't because I only have it on VHS!

I can rememebr when they showed Bubblegum Crisis 2040 and Gasaraki back to back on weekday mornings between 9 and 10 am. Is there anyone who actually liked Gasaraki? It was the Giant Robot version of watching paint dry.

I really liked the music. The show itself is one of the few series distinguished by being dropped by me on DVD before completion. I even have the artbox :/ forever unfilled.

when the dvd player started coming out and you guys had loads of videos did you have them transferred to dvdor did you buy the dvds

I gradually threw away all my VHS tapes and bought the DVD versions. I still have a couple where no DVDs ever came out or where the DVD was more expensive than I cared to pay for twice (or things which I just kept because they were funny, like the UK Nuku Nuku tape). Of course, I no longer have a VHS player anyway :/

My attempts to watch Gasaraki were thwarted by my inability to stay awake for five minutes. A couple of years back some bloke on ebay was selling a ton of complete sets for about a tenner each; if only I'd remembered that old adage about when something seems too good to be true...

As for VHS tapes, I've thrown all but one of mine (Secret of Mamo for the great Manga UK dub). It was especially painful chucking Maison Ikkoku tapes that cost me £20 each in the bin, and I shed a solitary tear when dumping my hundred quid Escaflowne VHS box set, but these things have to be done ;_;

Hell, I remember further back still, when channel 4 used to have anime on. It was always manga video releases from the era, and usually not long after they came out on VHS.

Now you have to remember that in the early 90's getting access to anime was a LOT harder, not to mention expensive. No internet streaming, internet to buy off cheap, and dvd bargains. A 45 min vid would put you back almost a tenner (which was probably worth more back then)

Wasn't anime seen in the UK as nothing but ultra violent trash by the general public back then as well?

I never had any VHS tapes. My parents never wanted to get a video recorder despite my interest, and they probably saved me a lot of money by doing so. Of course, now there's Blu-ray...

Oh, don't ever pay them any heed. They do things like read tabloid newspapers, watch reality TV and vote thinking it's going to make a difference where their cross falls.

I didn't even know there were places you could take tapes to get ripped to dvd. had I, I would've copied Cyber City Oedo, Roujin Z, A Wind named Amensia and Wings of Honneamise.

Another two I had taped were Space Adventure Cobra and another that I only remember the suffix title of (time stranger) about a french woman in a coma. Most of the film took place in her head as she battled her way to health with her friends watching over her (but they were also accompanying her in her dreamlike adventure) I really liked the ending song to that one.

Kind of...manga at one point wanted people to think that and would add extra swearing to dubs to get higher certs (if you've ever seen the dub and then sub of cyber city it's mega blatant). That practice was called 'fifteening'. Some people at the time would turn their noses up at a PG you see. Weirdly at the same time, on shelves were heroic legend of arislan, rg veda, macross 2 and quite a lot of other PG's and U's.

Eventually a few companies were putting out content for all ages.

One company tried to outdo manga by releasing Guy: awakening of the devil, and fell foul of the BBFC over Kekko Kamen. As well as rude stuff there was nunchucks which the BBFC of the time didn't like (crazy, I know)

Sky movies had porco rosso and totoro on (which I caught while house sitting). Also late night on ch4 would show the PG's too, and the big magazine of the time was manga mania, which would have reasoned arguments, and if you could find it, anime UK magazine. There was also J-fan, but that lasted 2 issues (I won an Akira soundtrack in a compo off them)

Those people who would only watch for shock value are mostly gone, I'd think. I'd watch everything I could. I soon learned not all anime are equal though.

I've got loads of original vhs tapes. Many of them like project A-ko i've bought on dvd, but there's stuff like venus wars and lensman that don't seem to be ever coming out on dvd, so they're kind of cherished.

In fact I've just had to buy video head cleaners to keep my player working!

You know, I don't see any evidence of this "fifteening" that's often mentioned. The only Manga titles whose adapted scripts were peppered with swearing were those already likely to be rated 15 or 18 due to violent or sexual content (Devilman, Monster City, Violence Jack, Mad Bull, Cyber City, and so on). Indeed, the attempted sexual assault in Wings of Honneamise was removed so that the film would receive a PG rating instead of the 15 it otherwise would have got.
