Any good noir or noiresque anime around?

Here are few Animes which have at least some noir aspects to them, but you will find it hard to find many them legit these days:

Psycho Diver
Goku Midnight Eye
Wicked City
Patlabor Movie 3
Cyber City Odea 808
Urban Square
Parasite dolls

There are *elements* of "hard-boiled" detective stories running through a good number of anime (GitS when it focuses on Togusa, Mouryou no Hako at times, Paranoia Agent during the first half of the series, but it's hard to find anything truly "Film Noir". There are some people who would argue that it's no longer even possible to make something truly "Film Noir" anymore, since the key aspect of it was capturing the zeitgeist at the time.
What was said here. There are a few anime noir moments or episodes in many of the more experimental series (and movies, because IIRC Millenium Actress and Paprika dip into it just as Paranoia Agent did), but I can't think of anything along the lines of full blown film noir. It's extremely hard to do well now I guess.

If I had some kind of cultural axe to grind, I'd tell you all to watch Akira Kurosawa's Stray Dog. As it is, I don't know what the hell I'm on about.

Well thanks for trying anyway guys, already got Paranoia Agent and Millenium Actress and Paprika on my list since I'm on a Satoshi Kon high =P Finished re-watching Perfect Blue, goddamn I love that film. So well shot.

I'll look into the others mentioned by Dave too, though gotta say never knew there was a third Patlabor (not that I've seen the first two (again on the list))

I would add the original AD Police OAVs to that as well, particularly the first one. It's more cyberpunk than out and out noir, but if you like Cyber City Oedo, it's well worth a look.

And yeah, Stray Dog is pretty awesome.

Out of the ones I mentioned you should be able to get Psycho Diver & Parasite dolls quite easily in the UK and cheaply too.

These days Anime has been pushed towards the direction of light hearted fan service heavy shows. The dark storytelling of Noir seem to be a lot more common in Anime OVA of the late 80's to early 90's. It would best to search in that era for the Anime you are looking for.
