Any Blu Ray collectors here? BR discussion

Ever since I bought my PS3 in November 09, i've been slowly building a collection of blu's. Anyone else building a collection? I couldnt find much of a discussion thread for BR on here so thought i'd see if anyone else has my interest =)

I have 49 titles so far (see here) and already planning a good 15 over the next couple months.

What's your favourite BR so far? For me it has to be something like Advent Children, or anything from Pixar. CGI animation looks brilliant in HD and even Toy Story looks stellar. These titles are what I usually put on for family members who are interested in upgrading to bluray.

South Park The Movie even shows what BR can do for "traditional" animation. I had the dvd and BR running at the same time and switched sources between the both just to show a mate what a difference it makes, he was blown away.

Live action wise, Leon looks like it could've made last year, the difference really is that stellar.
 
Well, mainly I have anime on BD, but I've also got a decent stock of films. Bought a Japanese PS3 at launch at least in part because I wanted to start getting BDs instead of DVDs, haven't looked back.

Would be hard pushed to choose favorites. Probably Shinkai Makoto's two films that are on BD. Also a shout out for the BBC's Planet Earth.
 
I was very wishy-washy about jumping onto blu-ray. Though i can see the big difference it makes in sound and especially picture; having a blu-ray of something like a courtroom drama or a rom-com seemed pointless. I should also point out i have over 1100 DVD's in my collection so most of the films i want; i have and thus didn't want to upgrade to blu-ray especially as i was only going to buy certain genres and films i thought would benefit.

That being said i have about 25 blu-rays now and alot of my early purchases were experimental to test what the technology could do. For example; 2 of the blu-rays i got were 'Earth vs. The Flying Saucers' and 'It Came From Beneath The Sea' 2 1950's B-movies famous for having their special effects done by Ray Harryhausen. Considering their age and low budgets; they clean up remarkably well. Some of the stock footage/background footage still looks awful but the film itself is rather impressive looking. In comparisson; Harryhausen's 1981 'Clash Of The Titans' looks quite poor; especially during the start of the movie.

I also ended up with Transformers 1 & 2 on blu-ray as i feel big cgi/special effects heavy blockbusters are prime (pun intended) for high-def. I also wanted to see (after having the regular dvd version of the first movie) if one of my complaints about it was any clearer; does high definition allow you to actually make out which robot limb is which during any of the hyper editted fight scenes? The answer is no by the way... still, certaintly looks pretty and who can say no to high-def Megan Fox?

I did come to the same conclusion as you zelda; animation and specifically Pixar movies look fantastic. I currently have all the Pixar releases on blu-ray (come on Disney; release 'The Incredibles' and 'A Bug's Life' already!) and they all look fantastic; some of the shots in 'Up' actually made me go "wow".
 
The only things I buy not on blu-ray now are anime and old TV series filmed on tape which can't be HD-ified.

Counting sets as one, I have 58 titles so far. The ones which it really brought an ear to ear grin to my face (not something you want to see, I don't look happy, I look like Jack Nicholson in 'The Shining') to see in HD are the new Battlestar Galactica, The Godfather Parts I & II, Gandhi, Leon, Nikita, Paprika and Fritz Lang's M. Watching a film in the best quality it has probably been seen since it's original cinema run in 1931 seems like a particular treat. I can't wait for titles like Metropolis and Lawrence of Arabia to appear.
 
Yes, what blu-ray can do to oldder films needs to be seen to be believed. I have watched the Original Planet of the Apes, Gone with the Wind, North by Northwest and some other older titles and they look amazing.

However, I think what is a problem with blu ray is peoples idea that it should look brilliant, no flaws......what a lot of people dont realise is that Blu Ray is not a magical media that can make a film made on a shoestring budget and decades ago (take Texas Chainsaw Massacre- my latest purchase for £6) look like a film made last year. Sure if a lot of DNR is used it can help things out, but this loses a lot of detail and makes it look less real.

Blu Ray gives the viewer the film how the director of photography envisaged and saw as he was recording. It gives us the closest version of how it should look, not how we want it to look, if you get what I mean.
 
I like anime art box sets which I don't find on blue ray however I am thinking of moving onto blue ray for non anime. I only have a blue ray player on my laptop though so I will have to buy one. My faithful DVD player has kept going for 5 or 6 years now but it looks like I will have to soon say bye bye :'(
 
I probably have around 40-50 blu-rays at the moment.

I have a few Hollywood films (Transformers 2, the new Star Trek movie). I also have some foreign films such as Mesrine 1 & 2, Leon, Good The Bad & The Weird, Red Cliff & The Killer.

I also have a fair few anime as well - Samurai Champloo, Basilisk, Devil May Cry, Full Metal Panic - The Second Raid,
Burst Angel, Escaflowne - The Movie, Ouran High School Host Club, Heroic Age, Claymore, Freedom.

The best blurays in my collection are probably Akira (first print version with booklet & slipcase), Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise & Chungking Express (Criterion Version).
 
I sorely wish I have region free blu ray capabilities. I really want tsubasa on blu ray, but it is region A locked =( how do you play your region locked titles. USA PS3 or blu ray drive on your pc?
 
I have a few blu rays now but not that many I really love the fact that you have the in movie menu. I think that the price can be a little to high on some items

I know I just posted about it in the movies thread, but more specifically, the BD version of Avatar is absolutely the new reference disc for how good a movie can look at home.
 
Woo, up to 84 blu rays, my collection is well on the way.

My DVD collection has stalled at around 300 thanks to BR, and that is my aim, eclipsing what I have already reached =]
