American anime distributor AnimEigo has announced it will launch a Kickstarter project to fund a Blu-Ray English release of comedy anime Otaku no Video at 10am EDT (3pm BST) on 2nd June.

AnimEigo hopes to release an English-subtitled Blu-Ray version of the two-part OVA as part of its 25th anniversary in 2016. It will not be region coded, meaning the release can be shipped out to anywhere except Japan. While the anime has not been released in the UK, it has been released on video cassette and DVD in the past by AnimEigo. The project's goal is $40,000.

Amongst the extras on the Blu-Ray they will include four subtitled commentaries (two for each episode). Extras for funding the project range from art books, embroidered patches, artwork upgrades, a dojinshi by the anime's character designer Kenichi Sonoda, and subtitles in Klingon.

In the past AnimEigo has successfully crowdfunded a Blu-Ray release of Bubblegum Crisis back in 2013.

May back this. Did anyone here back AnimEigo's previous project to fund Bubblegum Crisis?

Re: AnimEigo Kickstarter project for Otaku no Video starts o

I think quite a few of us did! I'm definitely ready to back this one too. The $50 tier they've added might tempt me.

No didn't back Bubblegum Crisis as i was terrible too late for it. But i might back this one.

Re: AnimEigo Kickstarter project for Otaku no Video starts o

Got BGC from them and will be getting the $50 tier of this. So excited to buy this as I love me some Gainax.

Re: AnimEigo Kickstarter project for Otaku no Video starts o

I was hoping their next Kickstarter project would be a deluxe Blu-ray box set of the Urusei Yatsura movies. IN MY DREAMS. More realistically, a remastered Riding Bean. Alas, t'was not to be. I've never seen Otaku no Video even though I've been watching anime for over 20 years. Maybe now is the time.

Maybe next time. I will never again doubt that anything is possible in anime releasing after the Dirty Pair TV DVDs and Patlabor on TV Blu-rays. Do AnimEigo still have the licence for UY? I sure hope so, but it's been a while since they released anything UY related.

AnimEigo do seem to have a good relationship with Sonoda, so I certainly wouldn't be at all surprised if we see stuff like Gunsmith Cats and Riding Bean on BD from them in the future. Time to save our pennies.

We are buying chaos the Otaking reward, right?

If nothing else, I'll be interested to know what those who haven't seen it make of it when it's released.

I am another one of those who backed the BGC project. I'll also back this one, just not sure whether to go for the $25 or $50 blu-ray.

No, they lost the rights a couple of years back. But I live in hope of them one day making an announcement that they've re-acquired them. If only the JP Blu-rays had English subtitles ;_;

Re: AnimEigo Kickstarter project for Otaku no Video starts o

Thanks for the interest in the project. Just wanted to post a quick headsup that those of you who missed the Bubblegum Crisis project can still get a copy (we have a few left over) at http://www.bgcue.com/

Best

Whoa, hi Robert. Thanks for doing all that work investigating international customs issues (and adding the $50 tier). I think I speak for everyone in saying we're always interested to hear about this and future projects :3

Keep up the great work Robert, I've seen a lot of interest in this Kickstarter so I have no doubt in my mind that it'll be a very successful one! I never did back the BGC KS because I was unaware of it at the time but I do plan to pick up the standard edition on your site down the line. I have to say, I'm very pleased that the Otaku no Video KS will avoid Early Bird tiers all together as like you said, it makes people feel like 'losers' if they miss out, and in the end you want everybody to feel like a winner. In any case, I'll be there day zero. I was going to import the Japanese Blu-ray, and may still do so for collectors purposes, but an English friendly release is appreciated all the same, to say the least :p Good luck!

Re: AnimEigo Kickstarter project for Otaku no Video starts o

The $50 tier was a no-brainer, as discussed when this came up a few days ago. Now that they've added it, I shall move to pledge my support.

Re: AnimEigo Kickstarter project for Otaku no Video starts o

Hurrah, time to spend some money!

I'd be open to pledging higher than $50 if needed but... I don't think they're in much danger of failing to meet their numbers at the current rate :D

Perhaps we'll be hearing about their next project later tonight?

Re: AnimEigo Kickstarter project for Otaku no Video starts o

If I were to back the $50 option, would the money be taken out of my account now or when it's released?

Re: AnimEigo Kickstarter project for Otaku no Video starts o

Kickstarter pledges are always taken out of your account at the end of the Kickstarter period.

Thanks. So, when they meet the amount, they'll take it out of my account? (Sorry if these are dumb questions)

No, when the Kickstarter campaign ends, so 23 days from now, or June 26th 2015 to be more precise.
