Anime/manga sales figures in the UK please!

I believe Manga did state roughly how many copies of the first volume of the FMA:B Bluray they had sold as of November-ish. They've also given some other figures which I believe I have in my Twitter favourites somewhere..
Oh, there's some other stuff there too:

Vexille sold 14,000 copies
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/11424616745

..which was 30% of what Appleseed sold, and Ex-Machina did 25,000.
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/11443846034

If a sub-only DVD sells 3000 copies in the US, the UK can expect 600 at best
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/14564450870

For a successful release Manga need to sell 5000 copies minimum on average
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/16453425204

UK is less than 15% of the US anime market
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/17715074043

GiTS Innocence on DVD sold 100,000 making it one of Manga's most successful releases, along with the Eva 1.11 BD and the original GiTS on VHS.
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/17980458290

Minimum print run for BDs is 3000...
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/23136719560

..but DVDs can be as low as 500 in a printing
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/23136811049

A bit OT, but Jerome reckons "Mai Mai Miracle" would cost "least $30,000 to dub. add anpother $30-40K for advance + $10K production + $40K marketing..."
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/13561826541314048

750,000 anime DVDs were sold in the UK last year.
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/15424231521132544

Summer Wars sold 2,400 copies in the first three weeks
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/61169330095788032

TGWLTT sold 5000 in the first three weeks
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/61169553111134208

Eva 1.11 sold nearly 9000 in a year
https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/68064681796976640

[edit]

looks like FMA:B BD vol 1 sold 750 copies in the first few months.

I'm increasingly pushed for time now - short answer why it's not all public is that it costs a lot of money to extract chart show data so privately owned companies see no real monetary benefit in releasing materials to the general public.

Wish I could write something longer -_-;;, but if it's a comfort - even if even hot show was selling millions of units - no company would release all their sales figures either! You'd perhaps get a glib "From the studio behind the multi-million selling Fluffy Badger-chan" but nothing more...

This thread makes me feel bad that I can rarely buy dvds on release. It makes me feel like it doesn't even matter if I get round to buying them eventually.

O_O

Given the relative population of the UK and Japan, this seems like a ridiculously high number. Surely something has gone/has always been fundamentally wrong with the way UK companies go about things. (edit: apart from having to pander to "waaaaahhhhh, I refuse to pay more than 20p per episode" whining from poors).

Yay, I win.

It's still a massive shame, though, given the extent of sales figures info we can find out for Japanese releases (although even that isn't exhaustive).

Thanks Shiroi Hane and kaze_andrew. Those were illuminating posts. I guess my reaction at this point is that if there's only financial loss for the companies and no benefit, then I guess it's unreasonable to expect them to release such information. Bleh.

Capitalism sucks.

Just to keep things in one place for later reference, Manga's Twitter stream has been forthcoming with information today!

Apologies for the txt spk. I am quoting.

In case u were wondering. #Mangas #Top10BestsellingBlurays to date are:
1. AKIRA 8.3K units
2. Eva 1.11 4.5K
3. Afro Samurai S1 5K
4. Eva 2.22 4.6K
5. Shigurui 4.2K
6. Professor Layton Movie 3.8K
7. Afro Samurai Resurrection 3.5K
8. Summer Wars 3.2K
9. FMA B'hood Part 1 3.1K
10. Devil May Cry 2.6K

'#eva and #Akira include CombiPacks, Steelbooks etc.

DVDs? Will leave that for another day. I think #GITS is number 1 followed by #innocence then #GirlWhoLeapt... #OriginSpirits.

It's so difficult to release a 24+ episode anime series in the UK on Blu-ray. It's normal for sales from Part 1 to 2 to drop by as much as 30%! Diminishing returns means more risk. That's why I am suggesting we focus on best-selling movies, OVAs and miniseries and avoid the more fringe series like XAMD and Casshern Sins.

Here's bit more detail on #Bluray costs as they relate to a Manga release. It can cost us anything from £3,000-£6,000 to author 2 BR discs. Add to that the cost of manufacturing, AACS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_A ... ent_System) fees etc and before we have sold a single copy we have a double digit investment we need to recoup. We would need to sell through at least 1,500 copies at full price in order to recoup.
Even though some of you are saying you were holding off buying Part 1 until you knew we'd commit to part 2 on BR, it really isn't enough of you to have effected sales in a really positive way. I don't even believe that if we released Bleach or Shippuden series on BR we'd sell enough copies to break even. Generally, a best-selling BR will do 30% of your DVD sales.
We could increase the price of series on Blu-ray, but I don't think many of you would support that. We are not ditching Blu-ray, but we are going to have to be more choosy about what we choose to release on the format. Was putting out Xamd and Casshern Sins on BR a good idea? Probably not. Was putting Eva 1.11 and Eva 2.22 out on BD a good idea? Very yes!

That seems very wrong, aren't US companies doing fine on not that much higher.

One of their production costs is too high, either the US companies are scalping them due to the insistance on dubs, or JP is charging far to much for what should be ~1/10th what they charge for US licenses (it's about that size differnce in the markets, alegedly*).

*I'd love to know how many of us actualy import USA releases, seem to have lost the actual split numbers for fansubs, but 15% seems way too low.

You're forgetting the rather extortionate BBFC cost - £2,000+ for 13 eps.

Although I suspect Manga are using successful to mean turns a good profit rather than just above the break even point.

I try to pre-order anime where I can, though obviously only for titles I'm really keen for, but if I know it's a series I want I'll slap that preorder down asap.

Congratulations on this sudden realization of what anyone sensible has been saying all along, Manga.
