Anime insults

Hell my college has an anime club.
My class has 4 anime fans in it(2 creepily obsessed with ones) and there are others around the campus.
Mayn, I wish I was in your college.

All I have is a guy who watches One Piece [who's cool btw] and an obsessed Death Note Yaoi fanatic [male btw] ;_;

Apparently there's some guy who hearts Gantz and some other stuff, but I've never actually asked him when I see him around. Y'know, I have my doubts it's that very person, I'll look like a tit too if I go to up to him and say "Do you like Gantz!?" And it isn't him "Eh, Gantz, wtf is that?" So yeah.

True but one of the guys in my class when i first met him 4th-5th sentences that came out his mouth was do you like anime(completly taken aback).
But then agian this guy also brags that he's seen 200 animes before so maybe it's a bad example.

"Ruthless Japanese cartoons."
"Boring."
"Sad."
"Disgusting."
That covers about all the negative comments I can remember being said to me on it though I'm still not sure whether or not I should take the first one as negative...

Reminds me of a course I went on, when we were going round the group and doing introductions everyone was suprised there was four of us who liked anime - I was suprised too! Everyone else was groaning but we were happy.

Can't really remember the last bad reaction I got most convesations I have go like this.

"What DVD is that?"
"*random title* I collect anime"
*Blank stare*
"Japanese cartoons"
*Blank stare*

The only other comment I normally get at work is if I say something about being skint is "You should stop buying all those DVDs" this usually from someone who is willing to go out and spend a fortune getting lashed up each weekend, my only comment normally is at least I have something to show for my money.

Best way to announce your an anime without actaully saying it... if your on break and there's a computer handy in your class, go straight to youtube and put on the first episode of Elfen Lied. Then Maximise the Screen... trust me it works. It even got a few Chavs interest but then that's probably got something to do with Lucy walking around without clothes...

oh yes the "Blank Stare" always fun, its like they are calculating whether they should keep talking to you or just back away slowly. Had quite a few of them in my time, usually from girls.

I've always accepted that people are ignorant to most things outside of the UK, I've always got it in the neck from 99.9% of people for liking anime/manga. My sister and one of my 3 brothers are the fans (but not much anymore).

I've had the usual insults thrown around, jap porn, paedo cartoons, etc, etc. It's strange that I'm 27 this year, been into anime/manga for about 14 years and this is the first time outside my family I don't have to hide it or avoid mentioning it

My friends give me stick ocassionally, but only for laughs, which I don't mind. And however much my mum protests to watching it, she enjoyed Legend of The 4 Kings and Prince Arislan way back when.

27 this year too and I know what you mean, during college I kept this to myself and the first year of uni, luckily I moved in with fellow closet anime fans and then I just stopped caring, to the point where my house has a giant Gungrave wall scroll above the stairs and a Cloud Strife poster over the tv in the livingroom.

No! Don't do that! That sends out all the wrong signals, lol!

Try a bit of Great Teacher Onizuka instead :p

No way show them some Bleach violence like the Bankai fights, thats how I got my mates into watching more anime

I think masking the fact you follow anime-- not telling people, hiding it away etc, probably means that you yourself are ashamed to be a fan. :?

Either that, or you'll get stabbed if discovered (Mosside, Glasgow).

Yeah I don't care what other people think. I tell people all the time that I like it - thats an important lesson in life anyway don't even care what other people think if they try to act against your personal tastes and interests.

The usual comments go like this (with extreme ignorance and stupidity)
"but its backwards?! THAT MUST BE WELL HARD TO READ!!!"
"Oh yeah I watched Spirited Away in film studies, anime is ****"
"Anime... is that french?!" SERIOUSLY!!
"Thats hideous"

However I have had some positive reception from non-anime fans:

On wearing an anime t shirt "wow I like the t-shirt - I don't know what it is but I love the pattern!"
"Nice t-shirt you got there!"
(From my sociology teacher) "Class t-shirt!"

My friends on the whole are cool and don't care as they do things which I'm not a huge fan of! I know have a few friends who like it now and I've been introuducing one of my friends to it. Some of them are actually interested and like the style of them. but me and my friends are in the minority.

usually the general public try and be hurtful as much as possible and judge people without any reference but they dont get off easily from me - their comments are either based on ignorance or racism and its funny to make them look stupid as they can never think of a clever retort if you insult them back!

This is of course my experience and in my experience the general public are judgemental people who don't like things if they weren't created in the west or aren't in the mainstream and never want to evolve their ideas - I'm sure there are other people like my friends who don't mind either way but I have yet to meet them!

I had a similar experience, once!

It was about 12-13 years ago, I was at Southgate tube station and had just bought a Dominion Tank Police T-Shirt. I was buying a train ticket when the guy behind the desk looks at me and goes "hey man, you watch Dominion too?", I was astonished to say the least, but I gave him a happy "hell yeah" and was on my way with a huge smile. One of the best days ever, I'll never forget it.

and now you all know how it feels when the media target video games for everything these days. It's always frustrating when people misunderstand your hobby out of pure ignorance, yet speak as if they're informed experts on the matter. If any of you have read about the recent FOX News circus gathering for Mass Effect, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Did you know jack thompson defended mass effect when this woman came out with this statement

I think that Manga Ent owe us all an apology for each time we have this type of conversation:

“What’s that “
“It’s animeâ€
