Go vent on a Grammer Nazi forum Mutsumi, nobody else cares. We don't complain about you making the three word story game pornographic at every chance you get. :p

As for those older Manga titles, quite a few did come out early on as part of the Manga 'Collection' (which I think meant they shared a common naff cover design and were mastered from VHS with only the English dub included). I saw a few in CeX in Leeds last week for about £2-£3 each. I almost bought New (Rhea) Gall Force but didn't in the end, I have no idea what the dub is like and it might have just ended up gathering dust.

This.

I do love watching modern animation as the clean, crisp lines and bright colours are very enjoyable and easy to watch. Also things such as Studio Ghibli's Iblard Jikan show that modern animation doesn't necessarily need to be flat and boring.

Also Shinkai needs to get a mention here, as my favourite director. The art style that he uses in his films (particularly for the backgrounds) is brilliant and is exactly the sort of showcase for what modern animation can allow.

Older art, however, can often be a lot more interesting. Character designs and animation in particular, I often prefer in older animations.

Back to the point of watching older animation in HD; watching it in low quality is pretty horrific. I used to think older animation was bad, purely because my experience of it was with very low quality videos. It's certainly not the case though. I imagine watching modern animation in video quality that bad would be far from enjoyable.

I can easliy ignore other grammar mistakes, it is just the apostrophe stuff that gets of my nerves.

And I thought you liked our horny little sessions in the three word game? ;D Was is not good for you too?

Back on topic though, one minor thing I liked in older animations was how because the static backgrounds were more detailed than animated parts of the show, you could tell if a stationary object would be likely to move or do something because it would look more animated, if you know was I mean.

Old-style for me. Also liking Cel painting artwork as when is done well is more expressive than what's done on computer. It's too neat.

Of course there's some cool new stuff as well, but some techniques and style you simply just don't see any more - even if it's a 'retro' styled show.

Maybe I'm only saying this as I've been watching Berserk most recently...

So long as we're talking about '2D animation' from well funded projects (usually cinema / ova, but occasional series), there hasn't been any backstepping since CGI painting and rendering started to be commonly used, and every new project is visually more exciting than the last.

Talking about the typical TV series, I'm tempted to say the retro-look of 80s animation is most appealing, but I think it's more likely that there was simply more of a distinctive look. The typical noughties series looks sterile, CGI looking cheap and not mastered in the average studio (though I wonder whether it has at least enabled certain projects to be commissioned cheaply when they would have never stood a chance). I'll go with the 90s because I think the industry's heart was in it. And by heart, I probably mean wallets. They animated things back then.

As an aside, the animation of robots: difficult in the 80s and usually pretty flawed, modern CGI trumps it but it nearly always looks out of place. Recent mecha series like Gundam 00 and Macross Frontier are getting it right, but I think hand-drawn animation had its moments before it was largely done away with. I've always felt that Turn-A Gundam looks brilliant for one.

Well I'm gonna have to say present, since 90% of my favourite anime has been made recently. That said I do like older stuff too like Akira and Trigun (though that's not mega old)

I would go for a mix. Overall it's easier for them to make high scale series on a lower buget nowadays, but as a result the storyline is usualy very stock. That's not to say there isn't great work nowadays, just a lot of junk that looks good to filter through.

Then on top of that, the work i watched from the 80's that got me into this kind of stuff always remains warm in my heart. Fist of the North Star/ Legend of the four kings and the like seemed to stay unique because they were hand drawn and so there was a unique style in most works. I was always worried that the stuff i liked from back here i only liked because i was a kid, but watching Nadia recently changed that.

So overall i guess i don't have a favourite. Just too change over time and too much of a difference in the same periods. I think i'll just stick with saying which individual series i like the best.

Fashionably late to the party, but I would argue the pre-2000 era is marginally more interesting simply because the strong economy and oav boom allowed far more crazy ideas to be greenlit with little or no studio interference. Not to say there wasn't an awful lot of crap back then too, but it tended to be a little more diverse.

As in the more you watched, di verse it got (hey-hey).

I selected Present, due to the fact that the majority I watch are from recent times. Though there are some present day anime that I do not find appealing, just as there are some really great older anime (including visually). Though I find it hard since the option was pre/post 2000, that makes a few series I like be right on the border. :) I've still got quite alot from pre-2000 on my list, but, they are a similar style to the post 2000. (Ie I'm not into Speed Racer(60's) but am into Slayers(80's)).
