Anime Books - Recommendations?

No, I'm not asking for manga suggestions.

The 900 page 'The Anime Encyclopedia' has got me interested in buying some reading material. It's a shame all anime books, like UK anime itself, seems to be pretty over-priced on my find-book search...

Suggest away.

Anime Encyclopedia's the best in terms of content and value (it's a huge book). There are a few anime books out there, I'd recommend these:

100 Anime:

It's a really dinky little book with 100 short essays on various titles. It sticks mainly to more 15/18 rated titles, but has a good range of new and older stuff. The language used is a little too artsy fartsy for my liking, but it's good to see someone giving anime some serious thought.

Watching Anime, Reading Manga:

Lots of articles by Fred Patten from various magazines he's written for from the last 20-odd years. It's mostly American based, but there's a lot of cool info and you get to see a bit of how anime fandom has grown as well as regular theme-based articles.

There are a couple more books I've got, but I've yet to read enough to give a real opinion. Stuff like:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anime-Akira-How ... 469&sr=1-1

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anime-Explosion ... 497&sr=1-2

There are books focused on manga as well which are worth looking into as well.

^ Cheers :)

Amazon have finally got The Anime Encyclopedia back in stock. My problem now is that I can't find any bargains worth buying to avoid spending £3 extra on Amazon's stupid postage costs.

Grr, some silly pirices for paperback (and mostly old) anime book prices around. Whoever decide that anything anime related must by default be as over-priced as possible in rip-off Britain deserves to be shot...repeatedly.

Long live the resurrection. I'm hijacking this thread and adding

500 essential anime movies

zettai: 100 must see anime masterpieces

500 manga heroes and villains

another mccarthy title

Anime companions

Schoolgirl Milky Crisis by Jonathan Clements: contains a wide selection of articles he has written and covers just about everything you can think of anime-wise. Very interesting read.

Manga: Sixty Years of Japanese Comics by Paul Gravett: Just started reading this and it already has some things that have struck me.

Japanese Visual Culture - Explorations of the World of Manga and Anime, edited by Mark W. MacWilliams: A much more academic book. Yet to start reading this one.

Manga - The Complete Guide by Jason Thompson - A book reviewing over 900 manga that have been translated into English.

I've used the Manga guide a number of times. It is very useful, giving break downs of the number of volumes per series. It is very expansive and good up to about 2005. It also rates the titles which personally irks me for what should be unbiased IMHO.
