Animal Crossing: Lets Go to the City

You're trying to use games to show graphical prowess? If a game looks bad, it's not the fault of the console, it's the fault of the developer. Your very post shows your lack of knowledge on the subject, here's Wikipedia's on the PS2 and here's Wikipedia's on the Gamecube. Enjoy.

Graphically the Gamecube is far more powerful than the PS2, but on the most part the developers did not use the Gamecube's power very well at all.

Where on earth are you getting the Wii is a "non-serious gamer" console. I consider myself a serious gamer, heck, I've had over 40 reviews published on Metacritic and GameRankings this year for videogames, and I consider the Wii exactly the same as every other console out there. They're all trying to expand the market and get more and more people to buy their products, it's just the Wii has gone about it in an entirely different way.

Rather than upping the power of the console as the same standard as the other consoles, they upped it a little bit (I believe the Wii is about twice as powerful as the Gamecube) and opted to change track with it's console and the first few games. However, at the same time as releasing Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Play and any of the other casual titles I've missed from the list, they've released Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime, Super Paper Mario, Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros Brawl. The output of core-gamer games is just as strong as it was in the Gamecube era and the N64 era.

The Wii has, according to Wikipedia which is using IGN's stats, 866 games currently released world wide, whereas the Xbox 360 has 570. The Xbox 360 has been out for longer than the Wii and has less games. So your very point is nullified that it's got a moderate amount of games, it has the most games. Yes the quality isn't great for all of them, but the same can be said for all three consoles. Crap games appear on all consoles.

You say the games are nothing special, and yet there are plenty of games on Metacritic that are in the 90s, along with plenty of Xbox and PS3 games. Furthermore, how many examples of solid, good games do you need to see for the Wii? Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime, Super Paper Mario, Wario Land, Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros Brawl are just games by Nintendo. Then there's Boom Blox, Baroque, Sonic Unleashed, Nights, Opoona, Samba de Amigo, Trauma Centre, Lost Winds, House of the Dead, Bully, Dragon Quest and that's just naming a few from this year.

To dismiss it as a casual console is ridiculous. It may not be your console of choice, but it's far from a casual person's console. Just like Serial Experiments Lain may not be to your liking, but it's certainly a top-quality title. That being said, there are just as many good games on other consoles as well, it's just we're not discussing them right now.

People play games for enjoyment correct but the reasons why they enjoy them is different from person to person. Plus after a little thought about it the cooking mama games can also be seen as educational stuff (normall mentioning Educational and Video Games in the same sentance is a death knell)

Besides which games like Cooking mama get certain groups off gamers backs, you know the ones who say that all games are violent and are corrupting the youth of today's fragile little minds.

Ironically the only flaw with that of course is that there is an american group which are against the Cooking Mama series soley for the fact that it contains no vegitarian dishes.

Anyway i think we've derailed this thread, while discussion on the Wii is sometimes fun We've gone away from Animal Crossing completely :p

Slightly tangential but I find it funny that the Wii is being flamed for things like Cooking Mama when one of the most successful PC game series around is The Sims - pretty much the epitome of tedious mimicry of real chores (and I loved it! Keeping my oven clean was addictive. I couldn't wait to get home each day and tell my slaves to tidy up their books).

For the record I personally hate the Wii but more for the gimmick of the motion control - which I simply cannot seem to learn how to do - than anything else. It has exactly the same eclectic mix of high quality first party Nintendo games and bizarre bargain bin family-friendly games as is usual for Nintendo consoles. And all three consoles in the current generation are currently struggling to attract certain demographics. The PS3 has loads of good games for me but if I say that to a FPS or platform fan they would look at me like I was crazy.

Wow didn't see your post there Archaic

@Rui well at least your complaint makes more sense seeing as motion control in itself is a gimmick unless developers can make it work as intended without resorting to lazy uses of it. Also liked the sims comment :p I also played it but at least on my game saves the 'ghosts' helped make things intresting.

Still end of the day people will continue to buy and play these wii games. People are already saying that the Wii will be another hard to find console this xmas (DS as well i'm guessing)

I get carried away sometimes - it's the writer in me! lol

<3 The Sims, it's so much fun. Just like Sim City or Roller Coaster Tycoon, all good fun stuff. Or maybe I'm just a maniacal evil genius in the waiting...

It's true, some of the Wii games just have Wii Waggle tacked on, and it just doesn't work. Games like Avatar, Harry Potter, Sonic Riders and even to some extent Twilight Princess. Although on either console TP is a solid game. I also didn't enjoy Mario Kart with the Wii Remote, but Sonic Unleashed is great with the Wii Remote, very fun :).

lol i love the way you contradict yourself.

You say that the Wii is aimed at those who don't play consoles.....and then complain that i said its not a "non serious gamer console" which is another way of saying its aimed at those who don't play consoles alot so sorry if they were a serious gamer then they wouldn't be the target audience would they?

As for me targeting the Wii graphically, your getting it all wrong. im commenting on the games that are made for that console and thus making a assumption that as the GC (IMO) wasn't pushed to its limits, it didn't become as successful as the ps2. and then made a prediction based solely on the ps2 looking better towards the end of its life should follow the ps3 too, making the most of the console when its life is over and moved aside for the next generation. if you don't understand that then i'll try to make it clearer (as i read through that and thought it does sound abit cryptic)

ps2 on launch - okay graphics
ps2 towards the end of its life (entrance of ps3 forthcoming) - the graphics have been pushed to their limits and look alot better now developers have had time to work on the graphics and know the capabilities of the console.

now switch the 2 for a 3 and the same rule should apply.

No, I said quite clearly, and I'll quote myself so that you will be able to understand:

Just because you don't like a style of game on the Nintendo Wii, does not mean it's not a game at all. Cooking Mama, Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Boom Blox are just a couple of games that have opened the gaming demographic and are fun to play.

And in the same post, I then continued to say:

There are plenty of serious games on the Wii, such as: Super Smash Bros Brawl, Super Paper Mario, Baroque, Nights, Mario Kart Wii, Opoona, Twilight Princess, Metroid, Resident Evil and Sonic Unleashed, which is actually alright. It's just the general gaming media that are slamming the Wii for not having enough serious "core-gamer" games, simply because it's got a lot of third party support with poor quality games.

So like I said, it's opened up gaming to a wider demographic, but it's still catering for the core-gamer. In fact, the Wii in it's first two years have pushed out more core-gamer games than the Gamecube did in it's entire lifetime.

The Gamecube had a more powerful engine, that produced games such as The Wind Waker, Metriod Prime, Paper Mario, Mario Sunshine and the Pikmin franchise. Games that used the graphical capabilities of the Gamecube to it's full extent. People may scoff the Wind Waker for taking the cell-shaded look, but that required a powerful console to have the fluid motion and consistently same level of graphical power.

The Gamecube wasn't a success because it had next to no third party support. You can't run a successful console with only a few games in it's entire lifespan. Whereas the PS2 had lots of third party support. There are various reasons for this, the fact that the PS1 did really well, and it's natural for developers to move over from their last console, the fact that Nintendo were very hard to work under with the N64 and that reputation continued on with the Gamecube (in fact, that reputation continue to today!) and various other reasons that I'm not going into.

That's true for most consoles- if not all consoles though. Once developers have gotten use to the hardware, they know all the tricks to get the best out of it, then things will improve. Throwing money at them isn't that bad motivation either  Besides if Sony are holding true to earlier comments (the one i'm refering to was said about 6 months-a year before actual launch) you won't be seeing a PS4 for another 8 or so years :p Actually on refelction they had the PS2 out for 6-7 years (depending on region) before PS3 so maybe some truth there....Blast we're still off topic

EDIT: True about the downfall of GC. Lack of third party really killed it. It had potential to be a fun console to play. Wasn't that bad graphicaly going by Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime

there's afew serious games. and there's more unserious ones...that you play for fun. i'm trying to explain that the game is catered to bring more people into gaming. hence why there's games that don't really seem like serious games (i'm depicting categories...party play is a game made up of lots of mini games. whereas zelda is what i'd class as a serious game)

the GC had a few one hit wonders and thats what i'd say nintendo is all about. and Sony are more the dominant console of the three.
i've argued the point that take away the fact that it plays games on the internet...the 360 is null and dated.. and sony brought out the psx which was HD before the 360 appeared. sony took a chance of blu-ray and its payed off. the fact that its not much of a gain unless you have a 40+inch tv and HDMI cable is laughable thou.

Nintendo are one hit wonders, when they've created the most successful franchises of all time? Mario, Pokémon, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Kirby. ALl of which are in the top 30 best selling franchises of all time, and the first three at in the top 15, with Mario and Pokémon being to top selling games of all time respectively.

Furthermore, almost all of the games made by Nintendo on the Gamecube were continuations of existing franchises.

Sony's game division are a ridiculous amount of debt right now, all because of the Blu-Ray player, the UMD format for the PSP and the PS3. Sony were desperate for the Blu-Ray disc format to win, as every other format they've ever introduced on their own (note the CD was a combined effort) they've failed.

HD is a great thing, and does help the gaming experience; however, it's not as widespread as people would like you to think. Adults have HD TVs, kids don't. Unfortunately young adults (<21s) make up a large portion of gamers, and most can't afford to shell out £300 on a good HD TV, so they're using old standard TVs. Shame really.

We really need a seperate thread for this now but i got a feeling the discussion will die if we do it but we run the risk of destroying Sypro's topic...A rock and a hard place.

First off it doesn't matter who did what first after all Dreamcast was the first console to go online in a sense as we know it this generation (you could but attachments for other consoels that would let you play against other people across the world staring with the Nes) Yet look what happened to the DC and Sega? admittedly Sega was stricken with problems, as it seemed that the international divisions hadn't learnt how to coperate and get on. Sonic Extreme is an example of that. Also it was more then Sony who took a chance. Sony may of been the leader of the group behind Blu-Ray but if they went alone they would of fallen on their face just like Beta-Max which just shows that they learnt from past mistakes. Blu-Ray will only be good in my eyes if it keeps as it is now, i.e. no company decides to get greedy and starts region locking the disks. There shouldn't be region coding anyway.

To finish i will say this, Nintendo aren't one hit wonders, afterall if that was true why have they survived this long? Plus to put it bluntly we need them to stay in the game. Competition is good for consumers.

I never really understand why you have to hate one company to like another's console. We have a Wii (husband's - I refuse to touch it mostly, due to aforementioned user interface issues) but I love my DS. I have a PS3 and a PSP at the moment too, because for anime games and strategy/RPG stuff they're wonderful.

Some people call me a Sony fanboy because I actually like my PS3. I don't think I qualify though because I also play my DS every day. And I'd happily buy a 360 if it ever got a game for my demographic, too. Is console hatred just a symptom of bitterness that you can't have them all these days?

I did enjoy SSBB on the Wii, but only because it was waggleless and the classic controller could be used. I've never quite understood how the company which ruled the user interface roost on the NES/SNES and handhelds became so addicted to making such weird controllers from the N64 onwards. The actual games though seem high quality. Every console has shameful shovelware and great games alike if you look hard enough. Judge the games, not the consoles!

N64 controller was the best :D.

I used to be a Nintendo fanboy when I was younger, but these days I'm more of an alrounder but I have to say that I tend to prefer the output to Nintendo consoles. I don't enjoy FPS, and I only like some RPGs, but my favourite console has to be the DS for the sheer range of titles available for it.

Someone call the authorities. There's a clone of me on the internet. :p

Now i was thinking the GameCube controller was pretty niffty, nice fitting and buttons were all in easy reach :p

When i was a kid i grew up on Sega consoles (had a NES as well but the Mega Drive and the Saturn i loved) And i wouldn't of called anyone here a fanboy as such...The arguments are too well constructed for that :p

i agree. and it really is a shame :(

also reading others posts, i didn't like the GC controller......but liked the N64 lol

xbox controllers i dislike....feels like piloting a plane...thousand and one buttons.
playstation hit the nail on the head for me.

anyone own a super nintendo still? i feel like digging it out and playing zelda.

tbh i don't think there was much else to say on the original topic, if there is then someone will say it either way :)

eh? You do realise that the Xbox controllers and PS2 controllers share the same number of buttons don't you :p unless you think every game is played using the awesome Steel Battalion controller (A+ for realism, F for marketability and the fact that you can only use it with one game)

There the black and white buttons right?
well they're used in Halo. ones a light.

tbh i'm in two minds if i'm going to buy a 360. at the moment fable 2 is the only thing selling it to me right now....nothing else brings a spark. i've got mgs4, cod4+5, dmc4, LBP, tomb raider underworld naruto storm. about to get the new: spyro, resistance 2, fallout 3, farcry 2, on the ps3.
so the only other game i'd want is fable 2 and gears 2.
Dunno, halo sparks no interest as i've completed 1 and 2 and 3 looks the same as them both.

The original Xbox controllers are just too chunky for my tiny girl hands. And for the types of games I play most the 360's asymmetrical sticks are weird, though in other ways it is an improvement over its predecessor so there's a good chance the next follow up will nail it.

I think the PS2 (and thus PS3) actually has more buttons than the Xbox's with L3 and R3? But they're cunning placed so they don't feel overpowering and hardly any games use them. The PS pads are to me a natural evolution of the perfected SNES pad, very logical and organised. I'm happy playing fighting games, driving games, platformers and everything else on a simple, consistent type of controller like this.

Nintendo have a bizarre obsession in their recent consoles with stealthing all kinds of weirdly named buttons everywhere. I don't like that. The GC and N64 controllers also seemed as though they were specifically designed with some particular Nintendo adventure games in mind at the expense of all others which required a more traditional controller (fighting games, mostly) to be good fun. The DS however has a beautiful, flexible interface which makes perfect sense - did they kick their console controller designer out and move him to the handheld department? The Wii continues the trend of strange Nintendo controllers even discounting the waggle, with pairs of buttons strewn all over it in unexpected places and the nunchuck adding another layer of confusion to the system. I was very surprised the first time I picked up a Wii controller and found it had so many buttons. Didn't they explicitly say they wanted to simplify it when the design was unveiled to begin with?

If they just brought out the classic controller but with the Wiimote's wireless capabilities so it doesn't have to be tethered I'd be perfectly happy. I imagine that I'd find it slightly easier to wave a classic controller around in Wii Tennis than I do trying to use the Wiimote to control Smash Bros even without the waggle. It's too difficult to reach the taunt buttons ;)

Tach: The black and white buttons are the equlivent of the top 2 PS2's shoulder buttons i've found. And the sticks on the 360 click in as well so i think that's a given now.

For fighting games the best controller was actually the Sega Saturns 6 button configuration. It was reproduced a couple of years back for some Street Fighter themed PS2 controllers, always wanted the Akuma one.
