Amazon, TBD and sealed manga...

Aion

Time-Traveller
I have a question for frequent manga buyers: Do Amazon tend to send books unsealed and do TBD tend to do the opposite?

Every book I've purchased from Amazon has arrived unsealed. I went on an imported PS2 guide buying frenzy awhile back and not one of them arrived sealed. Yet, when I ordered a guide from TBD, it arrived sealed.

The reason I'm asking is because I want to order Vol. 8-14 of Love Hina. Amazon are the cheapest, selling every volume for £4.20 or £4.50, but TBD are only selling for around £4.60. I was going to order Vol. 8-14 from Amazon but Vol. 6-7 arriving unsealed (with minor knocks) has made me think twice about doing so...

When you say sealed do you mean the manga was bound by something? as all the manga i've bought from TBD has been unsealed haven't bought manga off Amazon so i can't coment on that.

I mean wrapped in cellophane, like DVDs are on arrival. I have had books arrived sealed, my only single book order with TBD arriving sealed.

I'm not really sure if it's normal or not for new manga to be sealed as I usually buy individual volumes 2nd-hand. If it isn't normal, then I suppose there's no problem with Amazon.

I see well normally the only manga i've seen sealed like that is when i've been browsing through shops like Forbidden Planet and Waterstones. Those manga were the ones with explict content inside (like Battle Royal) All the other ones you could of picked up and read right there.

EDIT: realised the last sentance didn't make much sense

Yeh. Manga is only usually sealed if it's got adult content in. Though, thats not always the case. Some stuff isnt sealed.

Amazon sent me 'Hunter x Hunter' volume 22 sealed. It's the only manga I have received from that source which has provided this.

Yep, no matter who I order from I find that shrinkwrapped books can appear if it's a more "adult" series (or mid-series if the tone suddenly becomes more mature). I've had shrinkwrapped volumes from both of those suppliers. The knocks though do seem to be more of an Amazon thing - their delivery company seems to specialising in hiring passive aggressive escaped convicts with a grudge or something, because I've had a few packages arrive looking like they've been kicked.

There are occasionally freak volumes of series which get shrinkwrapped for no apparent reason (mistake in the manufacturing plant?) but the rule is generally consistent other than that.

Amazon do send smaller orders in sturdy cardboard packaging, so it's unlikely the stuff they send gets damaged on the way. It just seems like they aren't as careful as they should be when handling the goods before selling them.

Anyway, I've ordered Vol. 8-14 from Amazon to save a few pennies since there's no guarantee TBD would send the volumes sealed.

Not many manga are sealed that includes some of the more adult rated titles like Battle Angel Alita . Apart from volumes which have some included as a bonus like a free calender like i got with one of fruits basket. The only mangas I have seen being sealed was most of Berserk and some of Eden.

Most manga are unsealed, As people want to preview a manga instore before buying it.

The only company which i have seen selling sealed books is Dark Horse, but even with them it may not always be the case, i can't remember any of Hellsing manga been sealed.

Alot of the latest Shonen Jump manga ive bought has come sealed eg Naruto and Hunter x Hunter I think its because they have some stickers in the last page?

I've noticed that with some of the Shonen Jump titles I buy.

The only title that I pick up that seems to always be wrapped is MPD Psycho. Other than that it seems random.

Grr, how wonderfully frustrating - Vol. 10 was in-stock at Amazon when I made my order, yet it went out of stock (2-3 weeks) at some point and was holding up my order. Had to cancel it in order for the other 6 volumes to ship this year.

I'm now going to either have to wait for Amazon to re-stock (and order Vol. 10 with something else to avoid postage charges) or order from somewhere else. I was going to just order it from the TBD but, of course, it's also out of stock on there. -___-

Edit: Even Play.com, the next cheapest at £5.49, don't have any in-stock. What the heck!?

I think Amazon's free delivery has gone down? You might be able to get it without ordering other stuff.

I still find Amazon easiest to buy from, usually cheapest too.

Aye, down to £5. Vol. 10 is £4.50.

Since the only store with stock is selling for £6.99, I've ordered it with Vol. 6 of Suikoden III from Amazon. Trust me to decide to buy a complete collection right when there's a UK shortage of Vol. 10... :|
