Akira returns to UK Cinema for Manga UK’s 25th Anniversary this September

Earlier this month we reported that Akira would be given another release that included the Blu-ray, DVD, a digital copy and tons more content. And just recently Manga Entertainment have announced plans to bring Akira back to the UK cinemas to celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary.

Katsuhiro Otomo’s landmark cyberpunk classic obliterated the boundaries of Japanese animation and forced the world to look into the future. Akira’s arrival shattered traditional thinking, creating space for movies like The Matrix to be dreamed into brutal reality. Neo-Tokyo, 2019. The city is being rebuilt post World War III when two high school drop outs, Kaneda and Tetsuo stumble across a secret government project to develop a new weapon – telekinetic humans. After Tetsuo is captured by the military and experimented on, he gains psychic abilities and learns about the existence of the project’s most powerful subject, Akira. Both dangerous and destructive, Kaneda must take it upon himself to stop both Tetsuo and Akira before things get out of control and the city is destroyed once again.

The film will be screened nationwide with over 70 screens selected for a limited run on 21st September 2016. Manga notes this is the widest UK theatrical release of the film since its original run many years ago.

I'm likely just incredibly blind, but is it known yet if the movie will be aired with Japanese subtitles or with the dubbed version (or both options)? Regardless, that's pretty nifty. Akira played a heavy hand in my introduction to the world of anime so I'm always happy to see it getting some love. It should be fairly brilliant to watch on the big screen, too. :)

I think it depends which cinema. The picture house ones seem to be saying that it'll be japanese with english subs at least.
 
Huh, might see if I can get anyone to go see this in Edinburgh or Glasgow, most likely won't find anyone though as everyone I know are lazy %$£&'s....Is going to the cinema by yourself considered bad form? lol more to the point, should I care if it is?
 
Was tempted to go see this with my friends, but Wednesday is a pretty lousy day to go. Would've been great if the screenings were on a Friday.

I kinda want them to show the old Streamline dub. No-one screams 'TETSUUUUUUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!' better than Cam Clarke.

I say ignore the stigma and go for it if you're interested. ^^ The way I see it, anyone who'd make judgements is worth ignoring anyhow (and the likelihood of someone recognizing you is slim in general). When it's something you're interested in seeing at the cinema then it's always worth it for the big screen experience. :D
 
Practically the majority of my time line seem to go to the Cinema by themselves, I've done it quite a few times myself.

With the exclusion of some screening's in my town, Cheshire Oaks may be the nearest an Anime has ever been screened to me, but being the Non-Driver I am and the buses not running at the time of the day, it's going to be a toughie. If only it were the Cineworld nearby me!
 
Going to the cinema solo is so liberating. After all, everyone is just sitting silent (hopefully) in a dark room watching something, there's no social element to it. I started doing it this year when I got my unlimited card. I'm going to this Akira screening on my own after work.
 
Exactly, unless your rolling up with a huge posse nobody would know, and even then you grab your tickets and proceed to sit in a dark room in which you sit silently. It's nice to go with someone, one of my favorite cinema experiences was when me and my brother watched Pacific Rim but nothing wrong with going alone either!

Same, Cineworld in nearby Dublin is the only screening in Ireland. Also hope its the Streamline dub or subbed, the Pioneer dub just doesn't sound right to me despite being a better translation.
 
Got my tickets. Seems that there are still plenty available, though that might be to do with it taking weeks for it to appear on the Vue website.
