Advice on Black Lagoon DVDs

I came across that review as well, but they don't tell you the specs. That's what I like with reviews from Just Passing Through, they tell what audio there is and what subs including whether there is a sign/song track.

The US release is out for me as it's A locked. So I have two options.

1: Kaze release, which has lossless audio for both English and Japanese but doesn't contain the 5.1 mix and doesn't have the extras.

2: Universal Sony release, which does have the 5.1 English and also contains the extras but the Japanese is lossy.

I assume Sony have used the same video as Funimation, but even then I don't know if there's much difference in image quality between the Funimation release and Kaze's release.

As much as I would prefer lossless for both, considering the low price I may just go with the Sony release for the 5.1 English and the extras. Mainly the 5.1 though.

Just Passing Through hasn't actually reviewed these releases. I was just saying I like their releases due to the info they give.

Basically Sony used a BD50 and a BD25 for their release, with a 7-5 episode split...

But, in an error of authoring, they only used 25GB of the BD50 and the full 25GB of the BD25. Episodes 1&2 hit 40mbps, but by the time it's episodes 6&7, they peak at around 18mbps. NEVER thought I'd be thankful for a Kaze release!
 
That's too bad. I guess I could've ordered Kaze's discs just as well. I'm a bit disappointed with these sort of things anyway. Didn't have much luck with the few DVDs I've bought so far. I'm thinking of giving up on the whole thing.

That's not correct, well at least not from what I have seen. The bitrate in all the episodes go well over 18mbps and is constantly fluctuating up and down. You only have to watch the opening to see that. Can't check the disc size as I have no BD drive but I have checked a few minutes at different point through each episode. In episode 7 for example, near the beginning when Rock and Revy are in a red car. It's a side on view looking across a field and the bitrate spikes to around 40mbps, then it goes to a view from the front looking at both Rock and Revy and the bitrate fluctuates between 22-28mbps.

Like I said, I can't check the discs them self , so I'm going on what I have observed but I think they may have just reauthored Funimations discs. Has the same SD extras with clean open being HD. The menu layout and design is the same going on the screen shot of the US version I have seen. Only difference being the writing. Only has the red Black Lagoon writing centered rather than the red and blue. Disc 1 is in the same place, same buttons and font.

Anyone with Funimations, does the menu have the boat video behind the Black Lagoon writing?

Why they went with DD 2.0 640kbps for the Japanese I don't know. Maybe to save space on disc 2 or maybe they don't want to pay for both Master Audio and TrueHD licenses.
