ADV Goes Blu-ray

Seems ADV might not be dead after all. Intresting part at the bottom of the article:

The move comes amidst a lot of speculation about ADV's future, after a tough year in the market in 2007, the ending of ADV's Newtype license (see "Newtype Successor Broadens Focus"), and discussion on fan sites about changes to ADV's Website. ADV issued a statement this week. "We know there are a lot of rumors swirling about, and that fans are looking for assurances that ADV will continue to distribute the anime series they know and love," the statement said. "While we can't go into any detail at this time, please know that ADV is working through a few short-term challenges and fully intends to continue our releases. We thank you for your patience."

So, for those of you with PS3's or Blu-ray players, what you looking forward to seeing in HD?

All I know is that if things start getting BLu Ray only exclusive releases then I think I'll find myself back in 2002 and downloading again.

Yeah, I really can't afford a blu-ray player, though if anime goes exclusive to it then I would be pretty much forced fork out.

The future sucks :(

I really hope Blue Ray goes the way of mini disk. We really do not need a format jump at all. I mean VHS lasted 20 years, Dvd is only at half that and is still perfectly fine.

Would it really make much difference as i understand it if the anime isn't being made in high definition then simply putting it on blu ray isn't going to add anything (an image being enlarged dosen't gain detail).

Also won't the players and high price of blu ray dvds put most people off?

Plus it seems to me that high definition dosen't do much for anime being bereft of very high detail most of the time.

But i digress. I would like to see the next stand alone complex in high definition as i think it would complement the animation style.

This seems like a very brave(?) decision to make given the current climate. I personally wouldn’t make a decision on whether to go BLu or HD at this time and I don’t have an already precarious business to lose.

Plus high definition doesn’t excite me that much anyway. The improvement in quality from DVD to HD DVD is tiny compared to what we saw with VHS to DVD. I’m sure most people’s eyesight will decide the best picture quality they’ll see. It strikes me as a lot of money to fork out for a barely noticeable quality improvement.

But anyway, at least this seems to suggest that ADV still has a pulse!! And all I really want at the moment is my 6th and final volume of Kurau. Come on ADV pull through – please!!!

I'm sure things won't go blu-ray exclusive until the price of players plummet and become more popular. We've still got a few years of DVDs left.

Correct me if i'm wrong, ( and it wouldn't surprise me if I was, :p ) but, don't BluRay disks cost at least 50% more than DVDs to buy?

Anime DVDs cost too much as it is, so what the hell makes them think we'll pay BluRay prices?

I really hope they're making the right move with this one. I know it doesn't say they'd be doing totally exclusive releases but even so it seems like a risky business move. The only reason I can think that they've decided on this is to shake up their name again and gain some recognition in being one of the first. I don't know... I'd just hate to see ADV go down.

Like others have said about Blu Ray though. The cost is too high right now and the quality isn't improved enough to justify the additional expense. I wonder if a lot of thier target audience feels this way too...

People do seem to be overreacting a little with this. They most certainly will not be replacing their releases with Blu-Ray versions but will release Blu-Ray versions of their titles as options for those who want them. This is only common sense since releasing only on Blu-Ray would immediately take a great many of consumers out of the picture.

As far as HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray goes, Blu-Ray very much has the upper hand. Despite all of the various comparisons to Betamax, minidisc and UMD the situation this time around is a reverse, with Sony pushing the non-proprietary platform with Toshiba attempting to sell a proprietary medium. Besides that all but two of the major studios have now thrown all-in with Blu-Ray and one of those HD supporters has a get-out clause that triggered when Warner jumped ship, leaving only Universal as the sole all-in supporter for HD-DVD. That leaves the HD-DVD camp on their back foot and would require a massive shift in the markets to recover.

I personally wouldn't expect HD to be the only option for DVDs (and this is for the major studios) for at least another 2-3 years with anime following on sometime behind them.

I am just assuming they are going for Blu-ray for a couple of obvious reasons, somebody in anime has to make the first move, HD-DVD is lossing ground (so they hope they are backing the right side) and finally they probably assume many people in the anime buying demographic are also gamers and are likely to have been early adopeters of PS3 (although myself I won't be buying a PS3 untill the full function version comes down to about £200, and then again maybe not even then as I have not picked up a joypad in a couple of months).

I like this idea. A lot of anime is being produced in HD now and it seems about right for the rest off us seeing the full quality off what can be. As I've probably stated before, I notice quite a big difference between DVD's and HD DVDs. Of course.. You do only notice that if you have a set up that is capable of showing such quality. Say, A HD film on a SD TV really doesn't do the film itself justice.

FUNimation has gone Blu-ray anyhow with a few off its titles (Namely DragonBall Z) So I can't see why ADV shan't. I expect to see Gurren Lagann released now. And also its good news that AD Vision aren't knocking off yet and still have a quite a bit off life left in them.

With the Format war side off things, BD is totally winning and all we are truly waiting for is HD to just give up and then we'll have an single format and I'll be happy.

Yes we do need a format jump, and it couldn't come any sooner.

Let's have some forwards thinking, not backwards. (or in this case stationary). How very boring.

I want to see Evangelion in glorious HD and, given Eva's immense popularity and the fact it's ADV's flagship title, I can see that happening very soon! ^__^

Even though I was pretty set against HD formats a few months ago (yeah, I was wrong, I admit it!), I've got the DBZ blu-ray double feature (cheaper than getting the two movies seperately BTW), and it looks fantastic.

Considering how old the source material is, the remaster looks great...all the colours look much bolder.

I can't see them going BD-exclusive...that'd be pretty silly really. But I'm sure the stuff that came out on BD would look great (as long as it wasn't some lazy transfer...).

The price difference isn't too big a deal really. I got Superbad on 2-disc BD online for the same price as Zavvi charged for the 1-disc DVD. Different online stores are selling a lot of stuff on BD for sub-£10 that HMV is trying to offload for £30...if you're interested in BD, just shop around.

But the original footage isn't in HD and it would have to be unscaled and such, I doubt it would look any different. They are focusing on their new titles anyway for now.. I can see them releasing the Rebuilds in HD though, They would look very pretty.

@Warhammer: DVD's got a shorter lifespan than VHS' because in case you didn't notice, Technology moves at such a incredibly fast pace nowadays. Its hard to keep up.

I would imagine Blu-ray players'll start going down to a reasonable price within this year, Next year probably being the changeover.. IIRC Analogue TV shuts down then and Digital will the the revolution and we'll get HD broadcasts along with SD broadcasts more like America.

Blu ray is the way to go, HD-DVD has had it.

The big killer for HD (as said) is what you start with. Start with poor quality and nothing can make it better.

Found some screenshots comparing Paprika between the DVD and blu ray (it was released by Sony after all!)

Warning: BIG PICS!
DVD:

Blu Ray

Open both in different windows and alt-tab between them. Spot the difference.... umm...

Now compare that to a live-action film:
DVD

Blu Ray

And again
DVD

Blu Ray

Now spot the difference? Oh yeah!

I watch anime on a 2m projector screen and I have to say that anime DVDs do scale nicely. They are generally much higher bitrate than live action films and that helps a LOT. Lots of sharp edges give the scaler an easier time as well.

I won't be rushing out to get a new player for a long time. And I won't be downloading as the quality stinks.

5cm/sec would be nice in HD, the trailer was 720p. Again for now DVD will do for me :)

Eva on HD, the source material is too poor, it looks bad enough on DVD. :(

That could be possible, seeing as it was animated with cells.

Who knows if it will happen though... the new Evangelion films aren't even getting Blu-ray releases...

That doesn't mean it was animated in HD, though.
