A not so happy Halloween...

We don't need guns, we need more police with guns. Allow the common people access to guns & every criminal will be armed from then on. Do you really want chavs with guns?

Would you carry one? If you did would you pull the trigger?
Also worth remembering it would be more likely for yo to be outnumbered even if guns were allowed as gang people wold be the first ones to get them.

Edit: Mutsumi was faster than me.

More police with guns? Not sure. Tackle gang culture, definitely.

1) Dont tempt me, 2) I said dont tempt me... and 3) EZ, get 2 semi-auto with rapid fire, one for each hand and make them s*** blood. UZI-eeee!!!

But these prats deserve a good few kicks in the head... wont solve anything though, for shame.

I come from a place were guns are legal and it doesn't solve a damn thing.

My personal opinion is that people would be better off if goverment and police tackled gang culture. If it keeps like the way it is, I only see it becoming glamorous to be in a gang, carry a gun, etc...

I would own a gun were it legal to do so and I can confidently say that were a situation to arise where I needed to use it, I would. True enough about gangs, but criminal gangs already obtain guns illegally, it's the generally law abiding public who can't. The people who get shot dead here in the UK are generally either innocent people or police officers (or even the latter shooting the former) and not criminals. I would hope there'd be some kind of system of checks in place before people could buy them, but either way it gives you more of a chance. It makes people less likely to f*ck with you.

@Mutsumi - If you trust the police and the government to make and enforce fair laws then I'd say that would be a good idea. I don't however. I can see what you and chaos are getting at - indeed, where does it end if everyone has firearms? But personally I'd rather have the choice of being able to defend myself on equal terms with any potential attacker. Guns are disturbing, they're "The Great Equalizer" which gives anyone the ultimate power to take life and in an ideal world we wouldn't need them, but we don't live in an ideal world. We live in the kind of world where people beat someone to death over a hat. Education, as always, is the key not only to having people use weapons safely and only when necessary but also teaching people respect for others' lives and property. That is our main problem and I can't see how to sort it out bar some "Brave New World" style system of indoctrination to keep people peaceful, which is an equally unattractive prospect.

Aye, I'm sure they said that they would/are doing so and they have the occasional raid of a supplier (Streat Wars/Road Wars shows that on telly), but is it a sufficient amount being conviscated? I'm sure there are many different people getting their hands on items getting past importation/customs.

Either way, there is a real sad thing evolving in Britain, and I still dont understand why people want to be chavvy. It just seems like a very negative persona to me.

The way I see it, it is not about the 'ultimate equaliser' aspect so much as the lethal ranged attack aspect. At least you can run away from fists, bats & knives.

In my ideal world the police would wield great power & be free from corruption because there would be another organisation policing the police to ensure that. Criminals would be punished with righteous fury. :D

"Everybody in the world is bent!"

That's a nice thought Mutsumi, but we're living in fantasy land if we're going to have a government which acts for the benefit of it's people and an incorruptible police force. Who watches the watchmen? Who makes sure they're incorruptible? and so on...

It's beyond laws and law enforcement (many laws are bloody stupid anyway) what we really want is for people not to harm each other any more. But for that we're talking what? 'Re-education Centres'? Removing children from their parents to make sure they are properly brought up? That sounds like a totalitarian nightmare...

No, we don't. The Kira / Judge Dredd approach to fighting crime is no good because it only stops the crimes from happening through fear of reprisal. It doesn't tackle the causes of crime at all. As The Clash once sung:

Everybody's doing
Just What they're told to
'cause nobody wants
To go to jail!

Tackling the causes of social ills is more important and has a more long-lasting effect than punishing people once they commit crimes, or making them scared of committing them. Plus if you strengthen law enforcement to a worrying degree - who makes the laws? Are the laws fair? When you have fully armed police capable of deadly force and an unarmed populace, who's gonna argue even if they're not fair?

The cause of most social ills is simple, not enough good education, not enough people paying attention to education, or not enough intelligence to understand it. Those are the problems that need to be tackled, and the problems New Labour have my contempt for ignoring and allowing to get worse for the last twelve years. So much for 'Education, education, education'. 'Debt, war, smug superiority' should have been Tony's catchphrase.
