Ordered Haruhi 12 yesterday, so that should arrive later this week. Had Madoka for a couple of weeks thanks to Book Depository sending out my pre-order early.

What the hell is up with the large amount of Yaoi?

I was going to comment on the same thing! I must be one of the few of their targeted demographic that isn't interested in Yaoi one bit. Good week for those that enjoy it though!

Some of these were mentioned in a press release last week, but as they were not released until this week I saved thise releases for this post. The problem was that last Monday was Memorial Day in the USA so as a result the release dates get a bit muddled.

If people do not want people to mention Yaoi/Yuri/Hentai releases I will not include them in future posts. Please let me know what you think in time for next week.

I don't see a problem with listing them so long as there's nothing explicit on the covers (some of the male-targeted adult manga are a bit O_O).

Where's all the yuri, that's what I want to know. Does Japan not produce it in such gargantuan quantities as manxman, or does nobody in the West buy it? Idk.

My guess is that western publishers think there is a greater demand for yaoi over yuri.

And women say guys are the perverts...
Let's not discount gay men as a demographic here. Maybe the UK is just really gay.

Fabio got there before me, as long as the cover pics are clean keep listing everything Ian (I don't think chaos would notic... I mean appreciate such images being posted). And by "clean" I specifically mean no genitalia, I'm sure no-one whose opinion is worth caring about is going to get hot and bothered (at least not in a bad way) about pictures of shirtless men.

My theory is that there's more drawn porn targeted at women because fictional depictions of sexual activity aren't exploitative of real people in the way real porn has the potential to be, and more women seem bothered by this than men. Not to suggest that all women are and that all men aren't, of course. It would be interesting to know the reactions of straight women who enjoy yaoi to real gay porn, though.

I unsurprisingly have absolutely no problem with including the BL in the listings. Same goes for the rarer girl x girl stuff aimed at chaps (and the equally rare but lovely female-orientated girl x girl manga too which sneaks into the US from time to time), along with 18+ stuff in general when it isn't too obscene from the covers. I think most book publishers keep it tasteful where possible in the US anyway.

Ayase: I don't like to watch real porn of any orientation, more because I don't find real people (strangers at that) worthy of idolisation in the same way that 2D representations are, and also because I don't find it interesting unless there's a story building up with more to it than the usual plotlines of adult videos. I think that written fanfiction is similarly dominated by content aimed at girls on most websites, and indeed at doujin events there always seem to be a lot more fan novels (as opposed to comics) in the BL section than in the section populated by male creators.

There's a big divide in BL in terms of stuff which is very much aimed at women and stuff which most gay men would realistically enjoy, though, so I think females liking actual porn tailored towards the taste of homosexual men would be fairly unusual even amongst people who are into the whole real people thing.

However, I have no qualms with gentle real world boy x boy teasing. This pair of performers, singing as a silly modern take on a certain famously homosexual historical pairing, does a lovely job of playing to their audience and they continue the act in interviews as well. It helps that Ranmaru is so pretty >_>

@Rui - That's pretty much what I expected. Your point about idolising people / characters isn't something I considered though... It is interesting that Japan uses the term "AV idol" to refer to porn stars, though I don't think either are really idolised at all. They're not particularly cared about by the industry or the consumer, just sex objects to be used up and discarded which is the incredibly depressing thing about real pornography. Not that I think it shouldn't be allowed, it's just unfortunate that most porn serves as a constant reinforcement of how little people respect or care about each other. That's what makes fictional pornography a lot easier to stomach and guilt-free; I'd probably consume more myself if there was more straight consensual hentai.

It's Strange that there isn't more, but there is Kind of some decent stuff that isn't just for a Woman. It's quite Amazing on the face of it.

Yaoi is indefinitely more popular than yuri due to that women buy more manga than men and that the majority of yaoi manga are specifically catered for women - as it is also drawn by women. There are some yaoi (bara) which are made for gay men but on the whole the yaoi industry is fuelled and driven by women.
On another note I would love to see more yuri manga aimed for women reach US/UK shores but even in Japan it is in the minority. However, there has been a recent surge in yuri manga popularity so perhaps one day there will be a wider selection of titles to choose from.

If I might venture the opinion, there simply isn't enough. People may well presume there just isn't a demand for it, but I don't buy that myself.

Amusingly, and somewhat related to the theme of manga with questionable content, Amazon doesn't appear to offer browsing history recommendations for certain ::ahem:: products. Do they have some kind of policy against recommending perversion, perhaps as a result of angry complaints from buyers whose family members stumbled upon their reading habits?

Simple solution if you don't want your buying/viewing habits known is to delete them from your history. I buy stuff online for my parents and older brother. If it's on amazon, I delete it from my buying/viewing habits afterwards as generally it is stuff I myself wouldn't buy (last thing I need are detective novels and classical music cds recommended to me when I don't like them).

Oh, I know how the browsing history works and wouldn't mind stuff like that showing up personally (I live alone and don't imagine I'd give a damn even if I didn't), it just amused me that it didn't seem to be doing so.

It wasn't really a complaint. It was just an observation combined with a genuine question about the unusual amount of BL/yaoi titles compared to normal. I don't want to alienate our female and gay users so carry on as normal.

Presumably the gdlk amount of sales it gets compared to most manga.

Some of my Amazon JP recommendations lists are... er... well, I wouldn't exactly add that stuff to my wishlist and then point people in that direction for their Christmas shopping, shall we say.
