Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle Review

I heard good stuff about this film but I didn't think it really succeeded on its own merits. I appreciate it is part 1 of 3 but I thought that they weren't able to overcome the structural problems of the material - which seems to be the case with most shounen anime - where there are lengthy...

Perfect Blue returns to Cinemas in 4K this October

That'd be curious. I don't think Akira really needs a new master, but I'd be very surprised if there were elements outside of Japan that would be good enough to give a result better than what we already have. FWIW, the BFI National Archive lists its only holding as beng a 35mm positive.

Also, on the subject of Takahata, any of Heidi / Anne of Green Gables / 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother / Gauche the Cellist would be particularly fabulous. All still MIA on English-friendly releases. 3000 Leagues was restored just this year I think.

Well, that's intriguing. I seem to recall this film seemingly having a separate rightsholder to the rest of the Ghibli films for some reason, but I did expect that Elysian would have got them all like Studio Canal did before them. Anyway, undoubtedly one of the greatest animated films ever...

    Anime at the cinema

Saw Princess Mononoke at the IMAX at the weekend. Not much more left to say about the film itself - it's a masterpiece - but what a wonderful presentation. Hopefully some other Ghibli classics get similar treatment.

I see that Plaion picked up UK and German rights to the Angel's Egg restoration at Cannes. Presumably this means an AL release down the line? A total masterpiece that I'd love to own on 4K.

Great news on Eizouken. I can't say that I'm going to rush to double dip on Akira, though they could advance on the Manga 4K UHD by including the original Japanese 2.0 mix. Or dig up some new extras, like Otomo's (lost?) directorial debut Give Me a Gun, Give Me Freedom.

SCOTLAND LOVES ANIME FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 15TH ANNIVERSARY WITH LONDON EXPANSION

I'm not sure what to feel about this. There's something that doesn't sit right with me about celebrating  Scotland Loves Anime by expanding it to the one place south of Hadrian's Wall that has an embarrassment of cultural riches anyway. There are more Scottish cities and towns that it can tour -...

Got mine still in the cellophane - anyone had a chance to check out the picture / audio quality yet? While the subtitle and booklet errors are inexcusable, I wouldn't say that they're a dealbreaker in their current state - though AL  should be doing better QC.

4K Blu Ray collection & Upcoming Releases discussion thread

I would much much rather they did away with these sets and released these individually but I might actually buy that one - On the Waterfront, The Age of Innocence, and Little Women are all tremendous. Why the latter didn't get a UHD on initial release was baffling.

It's hilarious that Arrow have done a deal with Warner - pretty much the final boss of film catalogs - and they have licensed Clash/Wrath of the Titans and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Hopefully there's better things to come. Silence of the Lambs is fantastic, obviously.

That's pretty massive news. Don't think that there's a boutique label that wouldn't be interested in Angel's Egg - many have tried before.

    [Overseas] Anime News & Announcements

I seem to recall that the late Bill Olsen (of Code Red DVD, who released In the Aftermath at one point) said that the issue is that, at some point, the Japanese rightsholders lost/accidentally destroyed the paper trail concerning international rights to Angel's Egg. There's (probably) no problem...

I'll be having that. The book looks great too. I wish AL could do some prints of the original poster art as I'd love to put them on my wall. I'm sure Criterion will upgrade their release of Godzilla at some point, but the timeline of the Minus One release won't be impacted by it.

Thinking of buying a Panasonic DP-UB450EB UHD multi-region player

4K UHD is a region-less format, so 'multi region' is only relevant if you wish to play Region A Blu-Ray discs (or indeed Region 1 et al DVDs) in which case you'll need to buy a modded player or custom firmware (which used to be available at regionfreedom, but that now seems to be defunct so I...
