Did you factor in megabus? Or sharing a dodgy Ibis/Etap hotel room? Pretty sure you could get it done for sub £50 if you tried. Though that's not exactly pocket money if you're unemployed I guess.

I know a lot of Americans, what with the girlfriend being one, and it seemed pretty much a 50-50 split between that attitude you describe and being sickened by the whole thing.
