You should try to set your TV to NTSC, not the DVD player. If the picture is fine when playing DVDs that way, it should be fine. ...I think.

Essentially you have to find out if your TV supports NTSC. Have a rummage around your menus and if its an option, all should be well.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the staples I was told to watch by other anime fans before they would even recognise me. Chobits, Love Hina and Azumanga --> Even if you don't like them, they're series that everybody should have an opinion on.
