I can think of only two films that have made me cry and continue to do so on a regular basis. They are Schindler's List and Grave of the Fireflies. A very special duo those two.
Yeah I saw them. Good to know there is improvement but unfortunately I like to view a series as a whole, not just a collection of episodes so it is rather badly hurt before it is even begun.
I may give it a go at some point but it is not on my list of priorities.
(Time for me to be flamed)
FMA (The first series) was for me, the biggest dissapointment I have had in anime bar none. I had heard a synopsis of the story and the dark fantasy theme sounded right up my street. So I went and watched it.
Put it bluntly it was one of the most unpleasant...
Not maligning Perfect Blue, it is a great film (Everything Kon did is stand out) but it isn't my fave thing he did. My fave film would likely be Paprika (Though Millennium Actress is close) but all are great stuff. I am a sucker for letting stories 'breathe' mind (2 hours is often far too short...
Foremost my 'Trilogy of Madness' as I once described it:
Paranoia Agent
Serial Experiments Lain
Haibane Renmei
These hit home because they always have me thinking. It is really an exercise for the mind. None have much in the way of action, and in Lain's case it doesn't look great, but I...
Agreed. Origin was one of the most disappointing Anime I have bought. Had so much promise but ended up to be a third rate Nausicaa/Mononoke attempt which incidentally happened to look great.
Just a strange note - in some art I have found on the net, Ao had green hair like Eureka, in the trailer that doesn't seem to be the case (Though he still has the Corilian eyes) A bit odd...
Now the main thing I need to know is:
Will it be a PROPER SEQUEL and not some 'alternate universe' crap which is has repeatedly been the single most annoying thing in anime for me?
I want to see what happens after, not what would have happened if...
Digimon has a much better overarching plot (Speaking for the first 3 series), but aside from the last part of the series (usually anyway) that is usually forgotten and it is monster of the week (ugh) as usual.
But disagree, Digimon was much better (And I was 17 when I first watched it!)
Not quite as critical, but the first time I watch GITS was back in about 1999 - and me and my brother both agreed "pretty good film, terrible waffle based ending" and I don't think that has changed much, but it is certainly less waffle based than the sequel.
But agree that SAC is much better...
Surprised with the feeling for Birdy. I would agree the second half (or season 2) was weaker than the first, but both were completely watchable and are a pleasant change from most Anime coming out of late.
That said, aside from the dub I still prefer the old OVA :P
Arrietty
8.5/10
Just got through my rewatch (just got the blu ray/dvd double) . I think I wrote my thoughts on it last summer but they haven't changed much. Very sweet, absolutely beautiful, wonderful soundtrack, but a little lightweight overall. Could definitely done with a little more plot...
