What did you BUY today?

Anybody here remember Mary And The Witches Flower, the wannabe ghibli movie that came out in 2017? What if you found out you could get a brand new bluray of it for $10? I found out and almost instantly purchased it as I've wanted to add it to my collection since forever. I've watched it about 4 times because it has a good story and very likeable lead characters (mainly Mary). Like you I saw it at my local theater.

This was quite the enjoyable movie I found and actually the first anime movie I ever saw in the cinema, I still have my steelbook of it.

I actually was disappointed in Mary and the Witches Flower, iirc it just came across as too childish for me - similar to Ponyo, which I also didn't really care for that much. Yonebayashi did so much better with When Marnie Was There, which is my #1 favorite Studio Ghibli film.

So who cares if you didn't like it? I sure don't and I'm sure others don't either and it's not childish at all, it's a darn good movie.

It's a bit hypocritical to say "nuts to Banana Fish" in the AL thread then complain about someone else not liking something you like. (And I'm not even that interested in the Banana Fish anime).

I had to reply to him not liking Mary And The Witches Flower because it's kinda like getting slapped in the face and telling yourself not to slap the other person back especially if you have a history of animosity with them like I do with him. And that is another subject for another time far in the future,

Yeah, Animosity - 13 years running! zrdb is one of my best buddies to verbally duke it out with, ever since clashing vehemently on the long defunct Rightstuf Today's Anime forum. Since he's on my ignore list on every anime forum in existence, I only see his posts here when someone replies to him. As you can see, It's best to just keep it that way, lol. 😇

Anyway, I was disappointed in Witches Flower because Marnie was so much better to me in contrast. I was really pumped when Yonebayashi founded Studio Ponoc after making Marnie and leaving Ghibi, but I haven't followed them since Mary came out.

For me Mary is a very 'safe' project, not straying too far from the typical Ghibli structure and feel and not pushing to grow beyond how they had been lead before. For some I'm sure this was a disappointment, for other joyous that someone was carrying the torch - a Ghibli 2.0 if you like. For a new company seeking funding I can see how they arrived at this project, in this style, at this scope. I can see both the up and downsides of Mary.

Their next feature presentation shows they intend to continue down the Ghibli 2.0 path and although the review scores disagree I felt The Imaginary was a much better film. It's maybe not as polished visually but narratively I really liked how it comes together.

And you are on my ignore list also, End of story. I have some Ghibli films I won't watch like Ponyo, Howl's Moving Castle, Pom Porko but my favorite one has got to be The Wind Rises.

I will have to check out The Imaginary, looks interesting enough. I see it's on Netflix though, so I guess we won't be seeing it released on Blu-ray any time soon. I'm already peeved with Netflix in that we've now gotten 2 seasons of My Happy Marriage and they are advertising additional upcoming Bonus Episodes sometime this year, yet there's been no effort to put that anime series onto Blu-ray.
