[Overseas] Anime News & Announcements

The odd time I do get a DVD is when a title has yet to get a blu-ray release or be put on streaming.

I just purchased a used DVD set off eBay this past week for the Vampire Princess Miyu TV series, and paid about $100 for it since it's OOP. I wanted to pick up a copy since I just ordered the white slipcover OVA Blu-ray set from MediaOCD, and also have the two AnimEigo OVA DVD sets.

I have some Funimation DVDs that will never make it to blu-ray like Witch Hunter Robin, Kanon, Air and a few others I don't remember offhand. Those came from Rightstuf but I also got a few OOP things from ebay like Sentai's Living for the Day After Tomorrow. I kind of gave up on trying to buy series that were released as singles, because every time I tried to get one of those, there's always one volume that is either completely unavailable or sells for crazy high price. I wanted to buy Madlax but had no luck due to that. I haven't looked in a long time but I doubt availability has improved. I also try to only buy unopened discs because I can't trust that I won't get something scratched to hell buying used which makes it harder.

I tend to mix my buying.
Obviously, there's a lot that only gets a Blu-ray release.
If I'm not sure of a show, I often go for the DVD because price becomes important.
Chainsaw Man springs to mind. And JJK.
I'll never continue with those.
The Ancient Magus Bride S1 DVDs were bought purely because of the price difference but S2 was Blu-ray because of extras and a small price gap.

I'll always treasure my Strike Witches DVD's.

Let me be a little more specific-it there's an old dvd release and a newer bd release of course I'll go for the bd. BUT-if it was only released on dvd of course I'll go for the dvds. Case in point, last night I rewatched the 4 volume dvd release of Mermaid Forest. No bluray release, it's dvd or nothing, and sometimes the old dvd release will have extras that the newer bd release won't include for some reason. I really like my jpdvd set of Kokoro Library seeing as it never saw a release outside of japan-I just remuxed it with english fansubs.

Nothing of interest to me in that group, and another month with a pretty small slate.

What an odd pickup Our Last Crusade or the Rise of the New World Season 2 is though. Even before Crunchyroll cut down the number of releases so much, it was incredibly rare for them to go back and release something they had already skipped and this one originally aired starting October 2024.

I watched the first season on Funimation's service and didn't really like it at all.

Edit: Correction--I assumed the steelbooks were rereleases, but I was wrong.

Suzume 4K is real, like many of us I imagine, I assumed this was quietly cancelled. I'll replace my blu-ray steelbook (which I never got around to watching) with this.

I'll also be picking up Black Butler S4 and Vigilantes which reminds me I still need to buy the rest of the main series as I only own the first two seasons and the four movies.

Also, it seems that Vigilantes is a thinner chipboard art box release (similar to Spice & Wolf and Alya) only? going off of the image there.

EDIT: It seems to be a digipak with a slipcase.

It also looks to be the only version; it's not referred to as an LE and there isn't another version I can see on the Crunchyroll US store.

I really do not like this new thing of making only special packaging versions of releases.

Glad to see Sentai is actually following through with a steelbook for Season 2 of Dangers of the Heart, I will definitely be snagging that since I have the Season 1 steelbook. I'll also be getting My Gift Lvl 9999 Unlimited Gacha; I so love fantasy revenge anime, and Lvl 9999 was a great series for that!

Nothing there for me.

I have both Sentai's last release of Shirobako as well as AL's standard edition. I'm probably buying both seasons of Dangers in my Heart but will get AL's standards editions for those too.

I only saw some clips for My Gift LVL 9999 but it looked really mean-spirited and explicitly violent and nasty; definitely not something I want to watch.
