Just rewatched Patlabor movie 1 after not watching since 90s and tbh disappointed - perhaps a few spoilers

Greetings, 1st post.

I did originally watch both movies, if I recall correctly, by borrowing them on VHS from a classmate sometime in the mid 90s. I remember enjoying them though do not remember any of the content other than that they were slow paced and 'serious'.

Firstly my dissatisfaction it isn't for the lack of action, since, as above, I already knew what they were all about in that regard. Actually quite the opposite. I liked the slow meandering none action scenes, especially the detective walk about the city part.

The problem is that the ending just felt anti-climactic. It felt like a gut punch from that hydraulic arm of the Type-0. They 'win' and that's it. After all that buildup about how much of a savant the evil guy was there is no resolution. I thought that would come with the bit where she goes up to the tower but no, again, that was a letdown - or maybe I miss some 'deep' philosophical meaning, a la NGE ending interpretations.

Ironically I read watch order recommendations before and saw, one stating to skip the Early Days series and go straight to the movies 1 + 2, and perhaps 3. Well on the contrary, although the zany comedy is a bit jarring in the ED ones I watched so far (first 3) I much prefer the character development and just slice of life of lowly police recruits fare of the series. Feels much more chill and somehow satisfying.

The problems with the movie are not so much the fault of this particular movie itself as much as I don't really like movies that much at all due to the extreme restrictions they have on time and having to pack so much into just a couple of hours. So not really a fair comparison to put a series against a movie but it could have been done much better within those limitations as many other movies can and do.

This watch has been part of my recent campaign searching for, or re-discovering mecha anime, having almost finished VOTOMS, and the obligatory rewatch of Neon Genesis - the latter which I thought atrocious and absolutely hated it, far more than I remember (I was waiting for this 'controversial ending' which is so much talked about, expecting for it to make up for the mediocre whole series and that turned out to be the WORST part!) - which I am sure will get backlash but that can be for another thread.

VOTOMs has been mostly light hearted fun. The different 'stages' is kept things interesting, though largely unnecessary, but an interesting change. I was not expecting too much for such an old anime. I let the cliche characters slide as it is more just nice to watch from a historical aspect to see how mecha anime was at its inception. I got totally bored coming to the last 3 episodes or so though and don't know if I will bother to finish it and if I do it will feel like work. Just totally lost interest with the final revelation of the main character, which I won't spoil here.

Seems my attention will now naturally turn to gundam.

For the record what I have been searching for is 'real robot', hard sci-fi, mecha. VOTOMs is good like that. Patlabor was promised to be one of the best examples but the issues above let it down with the movie for me. So any recs which might scratch the itch there are welcome. I didn't watch too many back in the 90s as access was harder of course before broadband internet, so it was just a case of what your friends happened to have. I also was in a very rural area so even less access to the latest media.

Not the same but just to mention, I recently got through the whole Fist of the North Star series which I must say was the most fun of all I have watched on my recent anime binging. Doesn't take itself too seriously and the post apocalypse setting is to my preferences in line with my general sci-fi penchant.

I don't like giant robots as a genre per se, but there are some I have a lot of time for. Dai Guard is my go to, like Patlabor TV it's got a heavy dose of slice of life but it's more of an Evangelion clone, but here the twist is that it's the salarymen (and women) who ride the giant robot, and it's all from a Japanese business perspective.

I love Dai-Guard, what you said and also it's also hilariously funny with a great English dub - the humour in Patlabor TV was waaaay too dry for me (though I really enjoy watching Movies 1 & 2 with the Manga UK English dubs) but Dai-Guard is a delight (it also earns a lot of points for being like Martian Successor Nadesico but vastly less marred by sexism.) Full disclosure to OP: I love Evangelion, but apart from some very loose similarities in premise that are more technicalities than anything, they are really very different shows, and my reasons for liking each are very very different, so even if you can't stand Eva I would still def recommend Dai Guard, it's just so much fun but also yes relatively realistic on the robots front compared to many other anime :)

Much as I like the first Patlabor film (would probably rank it among my favourites, in fact), I think that’s a fair point about the ending. Once Hoba’s scheme is exposed, there aren’t really any further revelations in the story, it’s just the climactic action sequence followed by Oshii shouting ‘done now!’ with no real coda or epilogue to end on. “Did Kanuka Clancy die?” “DONE NOW”

Thanks for replies.

Hmm, in what way? I didn't have a problem when it was a loosely action oriented show albeit a bit uninspiring. When it went off the rails into the avante garde stuff it just became insufferable. I was expecting some kind of weird taboo breaking shock type ending when I heard 'controversial' but then quickly saw it was going to be nothing like that.

What kind of mecha is this Dai Guard? Is is more the organic type thing of NGE? I found that kind of gross tbh and also I thought they looked stupid, like power rangers, although I know it has been praised in this regard by some for the 'bright colours'. Also the enemies just looked totally lazy and uninspired. Lets have a lanky one that looks like a mecha, then a cube (can't remember the order), now a ring, and now an illuminati eye random shape. I also saw this as a 'praise' by some for 'original' looking enemies. Just low effort imo.

Edit: Oh I just looked up Dai Guard and see it is the general premise of it that seems like a carbon copy of NGE.

Wait whaaaat? I am on a UK forum, where I expect people to have highly refined tastes for dry humour. Lol the humour was about as in your face, and thus undry, as is possible no? on the series? It is pretty much slapstick. Maybe we have different interpretations of dry...I would certainly like to hear how that Laurel and Hardy type of stuff with their bulbous faces when they get mad or emotional could be considered dry. :)

For a newer series I have seen a few recommendations for attack on Titan. Watched the first couple and don't have a particular problem with it except again uninspiring monsters - just big humans without skin, lol though that will not stop me from continuing it if there is gold to be had there, which seems there is from people's general high rating of it. Then again you never know, people rate NGE as an all time master piece among the likes of Ghost in the Shell or Akira - which truly deserve that spot, so take such things with a pinch of salt.

Anyway discussing anime is probably as fun as watching whether I liked a certain one or not so it is nice to be on a forum to be able to share my likes and dislikes.

It gets points for being in the 90s style of my formative years. Enjoyed some of the wide shots of the city as well as the slum districts when they are looking about.

The basic premise of an alien/otherworldy kaiju monster of the week is the same, but the giant robot aspects are completely different, and avoid the NGE mindfrell and psycho deep dive characterisations. The giant robot is a machine (not anthropomorphised in any way) built to fight the invaders, and at the start of the story, there haven't been any attacks in years, so the robot has fallen into the hands of a PR department of a corporation, and the bosses are so tight that they won't even pay to start it up at corporate events.

So when the monsters return, rather than give it to the people best suited to use the machine, the company decide that they can score points and get the PR dept to fight the invaders themselves.

I reviewed it here

Ack I just (re)watched Battle Angel Alita (OVA not recentish movie!) and another tease! 2 episodes. 😢 I can't get no satisfaction.

World building (maybe world building is the wrong term as that means lore and stuff right? which of course there is little to none of in such a short runtime; more like aesthetic then) is phenomenal though in those few short minutes. Pretty much all one can savour in such a whistle stop tour. That is my conception of cyberpunk! Dark n gritty.

It always surprises me that they never tried to make any more Battle Angel Alita anime, but apparently the author was just not interested in pursuing it further, and that was the end of it.
Yup I read that after I finished watching and wanted to see what was up. His head was apparently not in it even for those 2 episodes and rather just wanted to continue focusing on the Manga.

It is like I said in another post, it is like with how some great consoles of the 90s never succeeded despite perhaps being as good or having more to offer than the competition but we can't experience the pressures they may have been under or commitments at the time. Hindsight is 20/20 and all. Of course he may have no regrets about it and just cba which is his choice.
